Authors note: This is my first story so please tell me what you think of it! I am barely a teenager so I don't know if it'll be very good but I thought I'd give a try so. These chapters might be kinda short but I hope you like them!

I fluttered the fan close to my nose concealing my face. Not that I don't want people to see it, in fact my parents are constantly telling my me show it off. They tell me this because they claim that I am a beauty. I do not agree with that. Sure my face is pretty. But I do not want to flaunt it around and make others uncomfortable.

"Would you so kind as the excuse me? I need to powder my nose."

"Of course. Would you like me to escort you?"

Ha! Typical Matthew. He is my fiancée but I do not really care for him in that way. He is an arrogant man who insists to take me everywhere, like I cannot walk to the powder room by myself!

"No thank you, Matthew. I will be quite alright walking by myself, but thank you for your concern."

He looks like he is going to protest but I flash him a smile and begin to walk away. Oh I wish I wasn't compelled to be engaged to him, but my family is broke and we need the money. All our resources are being spent on making sure I am wed to this wealthy merchant.

I enter the powder and find I am not alone. Inside is easily the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. She is so daintily made that I can hardly take my eyes off her. She is petite and has dark creamy skin. Her hair is dark like ebony and shines. Her eyes are dark and glimmer and twinkle as she smiles at me.

"Hello there."

Hello me?

"Oh... hello. If you can excuse me for saying so but I was a but stunned by your beauty. You are simply gorgeous."

She seems a bit stunned by this comment but continues our now awkward conversation.

"Thank you. I personally don't think so but thank you nonetheless. I was too stunned by your beauty as well."

"Excuse me but I don't understand."

"Really? Your auburn hair is to die for. And your emerald eyes compliment it so well. Your skin is the perfect shade. I wish my skin was like that."

I blink to keep back tears.

"I was thinking the same thing about you. I'm Rosilynn by the way but you can call me Rosi."

"Rosi. I love it. I'm Amelia."

" That's a lovely name. I should be going but I hope to see you at the party."

"If course. I should be going too. Goodbye Rosi...?"

"Yaroe. And you?"

"Losyian. Now we can have a proper farewell. Goodbye Rosi Yaroe. It was truly a pleasure to meet you."

"Likewise. Goodbye Amelia Lovian."

We part ways and I groan inwardly. It's always when I am alone and the hallway is now empty. I walk quickly but like always I can't shake the feeling that someone is following. I am always seeing things out of the corner of my eye. I jerk my head back and barely catch something moving back into the shadows. It is all I can do to not scream. I am practically running by the time I get back to the ballroom.

I quickly find Matthew.

"Someone was following me and..."

"Stop it! It was just your imagination. Don't speak of such things."

"Of course. You're right."

"Rosi?"

It's Amelia.

"Hello. Amelia this is my fiancée Matthew Stargh. Matthew this is my friend Amelia Lovian."

Amelia curtsies and exchanges the usual hellos, how do you dos, pleasure to meet you. He all the meanwhile speaks stiffly and maintains a grim smile. When she leaves, he turns to me and looks absolutely furious.

"Do you have any idea who that is?!"

"Yes, as a matter a fact I do. Like I said her name is Amelia Lovian."

"No. She is black! I cannot allow you to just throw away my reputation by allowing her to think she is equal to us."

"Isn't she?"

"No! She is not! It has no matter how much class and how she presents herself because believe it or not she is descended from the slaves and slaves are below us."

"Does it not matter that she is a kind person or that she is every but as rich as you! No! Of course not. Because you think that you may be better than her so she is filth? I am sorry Matthew but I need to leave. I need a break from all of this."

And with that I dash from the room.
