Me, You And A Glass Of Champagne

I've found him. I'm close enough to smell his cologne, close enough to see the golden flecks in his eyes... but that's not close enough. I need to get closer, close enough that I can reach out and touch him. Between us stands his beautiful fiancé, who I know is a lovely person, but, unfortunately, she is in my way. That is never a good place to be; people who get in my way tend to meet a very sudden end.

I approached his wife with a dazzling smile plastered onto my face, ready to get rid of the only thing in my way. She smiled back shyly, clinging to the side of her husband, Mike, as she had been the rest of the evening.

"Good evening." I greeted her before taking a small sip of the champagne I held in my hand. "My name is Madison Charmichael. You are Kim Young, correct?"

She nodded, her smile widening as she recognised my fake name.

"Madison? As in, Maddi from high school?" she asked excitedly, finally releasing her hold on her husband to shake my hand.

"Yep. I'm surprised you remember me... I've changed a lot since then." I laughed softly, glancing towards Mike to make sure he wasn't going anywhere. He was still stood just a few feet away, chatting with an older man who I recognised as his boss.

"You certainly have! Didn't you used to have ginger hair?" she asked, admiring the long golden locks that were falling gracefully around my shoulders.

"Yeah, I did. You have no idea how glad I am that I grew out of that!" we laughed together, her reminiscing about the old days, me trying to remember what I had read about this lady the night before. She was very different from her picture; her dark hair had been cut into a bob since it was taken, and she appeared to have had a considerable amount of plastic surgery. It was a shame, she really was pretty before.

"I know what you mean. Remember me when I was blond? Gosh, I looked terrible." I nodded along as if I remembered, when in reality I had no idea what she was on about. "Now you, you really suit blond."

"Thank you." I smiled one last time as a middle-aged woman tapped her on the shoulder to gain her attention. I nodded at the woman, Chrissy, knowing she was giving me an opportunity. I turned towards Kim's husband, noticing happily that he had just finished his conversation and was glancing in my direction. I saw curiosity in his eyes, and knew he would come to speak to me in a moment.

I strutted purposefully towards him, aware of just how the base of my dress was swaying around my knees as I did so. He was grinning at me now, only a few feet away, but before he could reach me a woman who appeared to be in her twenties stepped between us, immediately beginning to chatter away about a business proposal that had sent her career skyrocketing.

I growled under my breath and inclined my head towards her. Almost instantly a member of my group appeared by her side. He grabbed her arm and beamed at her, ready to distract her.

"Veronica? Veronica Jones? I am your biggest fan! I have read all of your books, they are so inspiring. I don't understand how a woman of twenty-three could already be such a successful lawyer, and how anyone could be as beautiful and talented as you are!" he gushed, discreetly shuffling her away from my target.

After the woman (Veronica, I guess her name is) was an acceptable distance away, he began to head towards me, his pace noticeably faster than it was before she had interrupted. Clearly, he was eager to talk to me. I was glad, since the only reason I was here was to meet this one very influential man. Finally, we were only a few steps apart.
