TERMS USED:

King (Wang) - the male ruler of an independent state, especially one who inherits the position by right of birth.

Great King - a title used for the deceased or past king.

Queen - denotes a current wife of the king.

Queen Dowager - the wife of a deceased king. It is usually the mother of the current king. If a king is too young to ascend the throne, the Queen Mother often acts as ruler in his place!

Emperor - a sovereign ruler of great power and rank, especially one ruling an empire. The Chinese emperor was considered the Son of Heaven and the autocrat of All under Heaven.

Empress - a woman who is a sovereign ruler of great power and rank, especially one ruling an empire. The wife or widow of an emperor.

King's Edict - the last proclamation that the king delivers before dying, including his will and succession edict.

Crown Prince - the male heir apparent to the throne in a royal or imperial monarchy.

Crown Princess - may refer either to an heir apparent or, especially in earlier times, the wife of the person styled crown prince.

Great Prince of the blood / Grand Prince - the royal prince born of the main royal consort (queen).

Great Princess of the blood / Grand Princess - the royal princess born of the main royal consort (queen).

Prince of the blood - The princes born of the concubines.

Princess of the blood - The princesses born of the concubines.

Manse - is a triumphant exclamation that basically means "hurrah!". It also translates to "ten thousand years" (만 means "ten thousand"), and was historically used to wish the king a long life.

Nu-i - a boy uses to address an older girl.

Orabeoni - girl to address an older boy.

Noblemen - the elite ruling class in the Joseon Dynasty: all the officials and scholars who had a stake in the government.

Eunuch - were officials to the king and other royalty in traditional Korean society.

Gisaeng - a female entertainer and courtesan in the Joseon Dynasty.

Concubines - a woman who lives with a man but has lower status than his wife or wives. It is divided in different ranks.

• Bin (빈, 嬪) – 1st senior rank
• Kwi-in (귀인, 貴人) – 1st junior rank
• So-ui (소의, 昭儀) – 2nd senior rank
• Suk-ui (숙의, 淑儀) – 2nd junior rank
• So-yong (소용, 昭容) – 3rd senior rank
• Suk-yong (숙용, 淑容) – 3rd junior rank
• So-won (소원, 昭媛) – 4th senior rank
• Suk-won (숙원, 淑媛) – 4th junior rank

during the Qing Dynasty :

• Empress (: 皇后; : Huánghòu), only one in the imperial harem.
• Imperial Noble Consort (: 皇贵妃; : 皇貴妃; : Huáng Guìfēi), only one in the imperial harem.
• Noble Consorts (: 贵妃; : 貴妃; : Guìfēi), only two in the imperial harem.
• Consorts (: 妃; : Fēi), only four in the imperial harem.
• Imperial Concubines (: 嫔; : 嬪; : Pín), only six in the imperial harem.
• Noble Ladies (: 贵人; : 貴人; : Guìrén), unlimited number in the imperial harem.
• First Class Female Attendant (: 常在; : Chángzài), unlimited number in the imperial harem.
• Choice Lady or Second Class Female Attendant (: 答应; : 答應; : Dāyìng), unlimited number in the imperial harem.
• Female Attendant(官女子), unlimited number in the imperial harem, typically granted to female servants who were chosen to be minor concubines.
