Yellow Raincoat

You know it's time to
put on that
yellow raincoat

when the downpour is
thick,

when you can't hear your own voice
through the sheen of
radio songs,

when the bank is knocking
at your doorstep with a
pickaxe,

when your army says they're
tired of backing a
lost cause.

So I put on mine.

I sucked my chest in,
hoping it would still fit, after years of
growth, years of
tear stained binges, years of
smuggling razor blades and needles in
an Altoid container.

I zipped it up,
vowing never again to
taste the rain.
