Dear Mom, I'm excited for school today. Well more excited than usual. There's a new girl. Some parts of me are wondering if- maybe- I could make a friend? I've never had one of those before. I wouldn't know how to act. Anyways, sorry for rambling mom. I really miss you. And I'll keep writing these letters until you finally respond to one. My logic was that you'd be thinking of me. You, as my mom, would be wondering how I am. So I'm sending them to you as what- closure? I'm not sure anymore mom. I just really miss you and Naomi's drinking a lot more frequently now. So is dad. She slapped me last night. I just want you back mom. Back in my arms. Giving me advice. One day mama. One day.
- Yours, Solstice
I take a deep breath as I sign the letter to my mother. It hurts. Writing letters she'll never respond to. I know it seems like I have so much hope and faith that one day she'll pick up a pen and write back to me, but I'm not stupid. She never will. Her new life is too extravagant.
My mom turned to drugs when grandfather died. She'd grown up in the foster system- she'd grown up an addict. Until grandfather adopted her. A single dad with two other kids, my moms adoptive sisters. While father was at work she packed up all her stuff and left us. Left me- with them.
As I finally make it to school I feel as if my legs are going to give out. My sister Naomi has her own 2013 Lamborghini. Last time I asked her for a ride to school she spit in my face. I walk- 5 miles to Cullis Lane High school.
When I walk into the building there's something off. Something different. Mrs. Jackson greets me with a smile. "Well, hello Solstice! How are you sweet girl?" She says with her warm grandma voice. "I'm fine actually Mrs. Jackson. But if I may ask- what's going on?"
She rolled her eyes and put a piece of gum into the palm of my hands. "Don't even get me started on that one dear. The transfer student just arrived and suddenly it feels like a twister hit!" I laughed and her non enthusiastic words about "the new girl." I plop the gum into my mouth and say goodbye to Mrs. Jackson.
I opened my locker and stuffed my books in there. Then I walked straight into a brick wall. A brick wall with green eyes and a long ponytail.
"Watch where you're going youngin."
I jump back frightened at the new face. The mysterious girl smiles at me. "Hi. I'm Ingrid." She says. Suddenly I resemble a fish out of water. My mouth opens and closes, unsure what to say.
"Close your mouth before that gum falls out." She giggles. "S-sorry." God. I'm stuttering like an idiot. "This is the part where you tell me your name girl." I snap my eyes back up to mystery g-Ingrid's. "It's Solstice." She ponders at me for a couple seconds then says, "Okay Soly. What's your next class? I'm a bit lost." Soly? "P-pre calculus." Dammit there I go again with the stuttering. She nods and waits for me to lead the way to pre calc. It's going to be a long ass day.
