I was sitting on my bunk. Reading some letters that I received from home. From my parents ( Mary and John), my brother Christopher, and my fiancé ( Joanna). I flipped through them when I saw one that said PLEASE OPEN, VERY IMPORTANT. It was from Joanna. A rush of worry came over me, and I quickly opened the letter. It said
Hey Robert, I hope that the war is not beating you up too bad, I heard what's happening. How soldiers are dying of trench foot, starvation, and other things. But I know you, you're a very tough and strong man, known that since we were kids. I also have some very exciting news. I'm pregnant. As soon as that thought filled my mind. An explosion rattled the trench. "ARTILLERY STRIKE!" "EVERYONE GET DOWN!" I quickly got on the ground, letters in hand. Usually the artillery strikes last a good 10,15 minutes, but today; the Germans only sent one shell our way. "Strange", I said to myself. Then I heard faint screams coming from the Germans trench. I think nothing of it and I move through the trench to check on everyone. Besides being an ammo supply specialist, I was appointed to be second in command of the trench. I walked into the main area or "Charge of Quarters" as they like to call it. I just call it command center. I walk up to sergeant Joesph to help with checking on the damage of the trench and on the personnel within the trench.
"Hey Joseph." I say to him
. "How you doing Lawrence?" Joseph asked me.
"I'm doing fine, just a little rattled." I said to him.
" aren't we all?" He says after let out a chuckle.
I let out a chuckle as well, and said "I find it weird that the Germans only launched one shell our way, don't you ?
"Now that you're saying it yes I do, usually the damn krauts would bombard us for 10 minutes non stop, but this ; this is usual." He said with his arms crossed.
"Should we go I don't know investigate?, I heard screams but i didn't think nothing of it; thought of it as a trick" I asked him.
"You sure Lawrence? You've been known to hear things and mutter to yourself." Joseph said to you. I just brush off this question because I'm kind of guilty of both of those statements.
"What ever Joseph, I'll show you that something is going on in that German trench." I said. "Davis!, White!, Pierre!, On Me! I yelled out .
The three privates came running up to me and asked what was going on. " you see that German trench, we are going to take it". The three privates looked at Lawrence with a shocked look on their faces.
" but corp, ( that's what they called me around the trench) I'm nervous. I got a wife and a kid coming soon" Davis said.
" well guess what son, soon so do I. I just got a letter saying that Joanna's pregnant " Lawrence said.
The bunker began to cheer and congratulate Lawrence on his newborn. Nobody expected this one out of me. I was always an introvert, a person that kept to myself, a quiet and shy individual, but when it came to plans, I would always voice my opinion.
" Alright alright, calm down, you all. Yes my fiancé told me today that she was pregnant",with that letter still in hand. I continued on about the plan about taking the trench to the three privates. " we move fast and carefully, from crater to crater until we are at the Germans front door. Once inside we kill anyone in the trench. Got it?" Once dusk hit, we grabbed our rifles, ammo, and embarked on our mission. " this is it" I thought to myself. "
