When I woke up I was warm. Whispers were all around me, chasing me like an angry swarm of bees. Scratch that, an angry swarm of wasps that wanted my blood.
"Wake up. Please wake up. I need you to wake up." A voice said. The voice was warm and soft, like sunshine and summer evenings.
I moved my head. I needed more of that voice. It was like my wish had been granted.
"She's waking up." Charlie whispered.
"Thank the sun and moon." I heard another voice. Mrs. Suffrage.
I opened my eyes and looked up. Charlie was looking down at me. Oh no. I struggled to pull my arm out of the blankets that I had been swaddled in. My arm shot out of the blankets and I accidentally slapped myself in the face with my own paw. My paw.
I almost cried. I would have, if I could. But cats couldn't cry.
"What happened?" I asked quietly as I stared down at the soft grey blanket someone had swaddled me in like a baby. The blanket felt nice. Comforting.
"It seems that though your soul was back in your body, it was still attached to this body by a thread. When you started feeling chest pains it was your soul being wrenched from your body. I can't be certain but that's my theory." Mrs. Suffrage put her hand on my head but I shrugged it off. She flinched, like I had burned her.
"I thought you had died. You passed out and you went cold and limp. Your heart stopped." Charlie said. It was then I saw her eyes were swollen and red.
I heard footsteps outside. We were in the office where I had first seen Abigail, I was lying on the desk in my blanket. The door slammed open before bouncing back towards the person who flew through the door. The noise scared me and I huddled in my blankets.
"SISTERS!" Abigail yelled as she stormed into the tiny room.
"What?" Charlie asked.
"It didn't work when we thought it would because SISTER'S" Abigail said too fast. While I didn't understand what she meant, a look of realisation washed over Mrs. Suffrage's face.
"Please elaborate." Charlie said.
"The reason that we were able to move the mouse's soul from one body to the other in our experiments was because we were sisters. Of course." She said, bringing her hand to her forehead.
"So Eleanor was right. Only she can permanently reverse the ritual." Charlie said. It wasn't a question.
"Why would you being sisters matter?" I asked, irritated at being left out in this revelation.
"Because blood can undo blood bonds. So if Lee cast a curse on someone and he made it so no one could reverse it, I could still reverse it because I am his blood." Charlie explained.
"So a relative of hers would be able to undo this?" I asked.
"Yes, but only an immediate relative like a parent, a sibling or a child."
"What about Sam?" I asked. Abigail shook her head.
"Sam is weak, he can't even lift a teaspoon let alone reverse some powerful magic." Abigail sighed.
