Preface.
Mallory walks through the dark, grungy alley listening to her footsteps echo off of the pavement with each confident step. She is used to this eerie atmosphere, it has become routine for her. After every shift, at approximately two-thirty in the morning, she would make her way down the alley that lead to her apartment.
New York City, a city full of prowlers and insanity.
But there are also so many good things about this city as well, so many good people too. She couldn’t help but think that at least her part of the city is safe. She has never felt threatened or endangered in the last two years since she’s lived here.
Mallory reaches her doorstep, and unlocks her front door. She closes it behind her, fighting the urge to inwardly shiver. A sudden feeling of being watched overwhelms her, and she locks the door in a panic. Peering out of the eyehole, she scolds herself for being so silly, there’s no one out there.
I must be exhausted. She thinks to herself.
She runs up the few stairs that lead to her main room, and amidst entering it, she places her eyes on her couch right away. She knows that if she sleeps on the couch that she will be regretting it when she wakes up.
The all too familiar feel of her muscles protesting against her movements, and the aching back.
It’s hell.
Definitely going to my bed to sleep, she decided. She makes her way through the small living room, and right through the open door of her bedroom. She pulls her shirt over her head, and unbuttons her jeans, shimmying them off. Hopping into her bed, she allows her mind to relax and she pulls her covers up to her chin, welcoming the warmth and comfort.
Another day, another dollar.
Tomorrow will play out just the same way, sleep until noon, wake up, eat, get dressed, do some chores, and then off to the bar for the dinner shift.
With this last thought, Mallory drifts off into sleep.
What she is unaware of though, is the unfamiliar presence lurking around her. The warm atmosphere, becoming cooler and cooler with every passing hour. The already dark room, turning to pitch black. The stranger, standing by her bedside, watching her chest move up and down with every labored breath she takes.
She is completely unaware.
Happily asleep; while darkness surrounds her.
