I was attending a little party to which most German-speaking tennis players were invited as well as other players. A very good friend of mine, Dominic Thiem, was driving me there and we were having the same conversation we'd always have whenever I'd talk about the one and only Jan-Lennard Struff.

"I'm so excited about finally seeing him again! I've missed him so much..."

"Lita, what did I tell you about your feelings for him?"

"I know, I know, 'If you never tell him, he'll never know' but that's fine by me, I don't expect anything from him."

"Annnnd of course that has nothing to do with you being too shy to tell him..."

"Why would I? He doesn't like me back anyway."

"It's obvious he likes you."

"Didn't you tell me that he avoided answering your questions anytime you tried to make him confess to you?"

"Which can only mean one thing: he does like you."

"OR he doesn't and your questions made him uncomfortable. It's fine the way it is, Domi, really."

"Yeah, just keep telling yourself that until he has a girlfriend..."

I could not help but picture it in my mind. His arm around another woman, his lips kissing her, not me. That felt awful.

"Oh Lita I'm sorry, I didn't want to make you sad... It's just... I'm convinced he has a thing for you and I don't want you to have any regrets if he moves on."

"I know."

I remained silent for the rest of the drive because I was in deep thought.

But as soon as I saw my oh-so-tall-and-handsome Struffi, all the negativity vanished. He saw us and gave me a beautiful smile before coming our way. As he was leaning down to greet me, I gripped his shoulder and gave him a hearty kiss on the cheek as he kissed mine lightly. Oh God, that felt so good... Yeah, he had this effect on me.

The hours went by and I was chatting with Domi about Diego Schwartzman.

"There's just no way! He can't be such a lightweight, he's a professional tennis player!"

"I assure you he is!"

"Oh come on! If he's no more than 150 pounds, I'm telling Struffi I love him."

It's only when I saw Domi freeze with a devilish smile on his face that I knew I had made a HUGE mistake.

"No no no. Domi. NO."

"You're a woman of your word, aren't you?"

Before I could answer, he was gone. He was probably after Schwartzman. I sat down, thinking about what I had just done. Please Schwartzman, please be more than 150 pounds... Oh God. Domi and him were coming my way and their smiles told me I was in trouble.

"Gotcha! I was right!"

"Sorry Lita, I'm 141 pounds!"

"Oh, you suck, Diego!"

"Haha, be good Lita! It's not my fault I'm a lightweight!" he said while walking away

"Now, you know what to do, don't you?"

"Oh come on Domi, don't do that..."

"I'm so doing it! I won't miss on an opportunity like that!"

He dragged me through the crowd, looking for Jan and eventually found him. I felt good just looking at him, but that was before I remembered what I was here for. Dominic pulled both of us through the crowd, saying he had something important to do and shoved Struffi and I in an empty cupboard.

"Au!" [That's the onomatopoeia for pain in German.] said Jan as his head hit the very low ceiling with a thud.

"Are you okay, Jan?"

"Yeah, I think so. Might have lost a bit of IQ... It's funny how you always call me Jan, the others always call me Struffi."

"You don't like it?"

"Yes I do, I just think it's funny."

"To tell you the truth, it's my favorite name."

"Really?"

"Yup."

I couldn't help but look down. Everything about him, even his name, was perfect. Which led me to why I was here with him.

"Are you ok? You look worried."

"Yeah. Yeah... It's just... I lost a bet to Domi and now I have to do something I absolutely didn't want to do."

"Oh. I guess that has to do with me?"

"You guessed right."

And there it was. Silence. Jan was expecting me to say something and the words wouldn't come out. Damn me. I started blushing as never before. I was so hot all of a sudden... I took a deep breath, but couldn't hold his stare. I just couldn't. Not now.

"Jan... I love you..." I said, looking down because I couldn't muster up the courage to say it to his face.

"What? I'm sorry Lita but I'm not sure I heard correctly; I think I may be imagining things."

"Are you serious?"

"Yes, unfortunately. Can you repeat that for me? Please?"

I took another deep breath and tried to speak louder.

"I said I love you."

"Oh."

He looked genuinely surprised and a little embarrassed.

"What kind of 'Oh' is this?"

"It's an 'Oh, I wasn't expecting this."

"...Okay then. Look, I'm sorry, I didn't want to bother you with that but Domi forced me. If you want me out of your life, that's okay, I'll just have to... Handle it."

I had turned my back on him as quick as possible and my hand was on the door handle, but suddenly Jan covered my hand with his, pulling up the handle so the door wouldn't open.

"Wait."

I turned around. He was so close his body was almost touching mine. He cupped my chin, making me look up at his sweet face and gorgeous eyes.

"What if I love you too?"

A huge grin appeared on my face before I could even think of stopping it.

"Oh?"

We burst out laughing as he realized I was teasing him about his reaction earlier.

"Do you?"

"Oh yes. I have for a long time. The very first time I saw you, I knew I was doomed."

I giggled while enjoying the sound of his laugh.

"So... Can I..." I said while getting a little closer to him

"Come here, beautiful."

Jan wrapped his arms around me and hugged me tight. When I looked up at him, he kissed me, sending me to heaven. I put my arms around him, thinking that from now on, I would be able to do that anytime I wanted. Wow.
