At the time, the Gems believed that corruption happened after the Diamonds sent a light, but they were wrong. While it may seem like that, it was actually a ruse that they used to prevent the development of a cure for the corrupted gems. The actual cause of corruption laid in the instinctual habits of the gems.
Gems are very similar to humans in terms of evolution. At first, they looked nothing alike to their current day counterpart, but as time went on they underwent changes that shaped the into the beings today. "Gem monsters" aren't really monsters, they're the primitive forms of the Gems. This is reflected in their actions. They don't act without reason, they just act based on primal instinct.
During the war, gems became stressed due to the daily occurrence of other gems being shattered. To forget this, gems started casting away their humanity so it would be easier to fend off the rebellion. This came with consequences of course. Eventually, gems starting acting on primal instinct and their form began to reflect that. Now the corruption of gems aren't only caused by stress and grief. Sometimes they're caused by mistrust or insanity. One case of mistrust was the rumored "Black Pearl".
Steven, although he is part human, is no exception to this rule. Unbeknownst to Steven, part of his conscious is getting corrupted.
