Day one: It isn't getting any easier. Forb says that mom and dad have finalized the funeral preparations. He says he is okay, but I see the way he looks when he thinks I'm not looking. I can see the sadness in his eyes. His rectangular nose twitches and I can tell he is affected. We all are. I never would have made that machine if I knew what it would be used for, and I know Forb feels the same way.

"Do you think she will be there..?" Forb glances over at me as he asks. We are sitting in our room, the only sound prior, the birds chirping outside the window as the soft breeze drifts into the room. It rustles the curtain.

"Who do you mean?" I respond.

"Canadace," he replies quietly as he keeps his eyes fixated on his crossword puzzle.

"Dammit Forb! She isn't coming back. Not even in spirit. She left this world...left us.." I can feel the tears welling in my eyes and I turn to leave the room. I open the door and hear a sniffle. I know Forb wants to stay strong, but he is slowly cracking like a piece of pottery dropped on a rectangular carpet square. I've never considered Forb to be a religious guy. Then again, he keeps pretty much everything to himself. The only time he really ever opens up is when we have late night talks, and this is usually only when Forb has a panic attack. There's a lot to know about him. He has many layers, like an onion, but is too scared to open up. I realize that he probably won't open up for a long time after this. I can only hope that this fantasy of Canadace coming back and watching over him keeps him from going over the edge. I only wish I had something like that. I'm not the kind of person to rely on hopes and dreams to keep me sane. But who knows, I didn't think Forb was either.

I get in my car and start the engine. I've never had to dress up for anything serious, so Forb and I rented suits. I pull out and drive to go pick them up. As I get out of my car, I see a woman with long black hair walk into the cafe next to the rental place.

"Huh. That kind of looked like Isabella," I say to myself. I walk in and grab our suits. I see a prom dress on the mannequin next to me. It makes me wince to think that Canadace will never go to her senior prom. She was so young.

All of a sudden, I hear my moms voice. I realize that one of her songs is playing over the speakers in the store. I tear up again and swiftly exit. Damn, it's going to be a long week. It's gonna be an even longer school year. Summer was finally over and the reality of school and the existential crisis that is life was becoming apparent every day.

Forb isn't allowed to go to school anymore. He was caught by the Syrian government after committing various war crimes during the War on Terror. The US Federal government thankfully got him out of it and gave him an official pardon because he helped them build a new rover for NASA and gave the US army corps blueprints for a new kind of military machine that solved many artillery problems of 21st-century tanks. Anyway, now Forb has to stay out of school for a year and will have to retake freshmen year. This is a worse time as any for this whole Canadace situation to happen because no Forb is stuck at home all day with his thoughts and no one to keep an eye on him.

I contemplate this as I hop into my car. I start the engine and suddenly a face appears next to my window. The black haired girl from before was standing outside my car. It was Isabella!

"Oh my god! I can't believe it's really you Phinus!" she says through the window.

"It's been ages, Isabella. It's great to see you," I reply back, happy to have my mind off of all this.

"Are you busy? Can we go for a drive and catch up ?" she asks.

"Yeah, sure."

She hops in the passengers seat and we drive off.
