Edward Nygma/The Riddler . .
A brilliant and egotistical individual who believes himself to be Batman's intellectual superior, Edward Nygma was abused as a child by his narcissistic father, who belittled him in an attempt to make him feel inferior. Adept at solving puzzles and word games, he attempted to prove his father wrong when he showed off to his class how intelligent he really was. But even though he won the competition, his father dubbed him a cheater and further made him feel worthless and unintelligent. However, it wasn't enough. He would spend the rest of his life trying to outsmart everyone, not being able to put his obsession of riddles away, and thus, driven insane by this desire, he becomes the masked villain..the Riddler.

Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin . .
Born from a down and out blue-blood family, Oswald was far from an ordinary child. Bullied at school for his bird like appearance, complete with a stout figure, beak shaped nose, awkward waddle and nasily voice, he developed a connection with birds as they were his only friends as a child, and eventually, after a trip to the zoo, realized that the penguin was one he most related to and decided to take the bird's name as his own nickname. After his father died of pneumonia, his mother obsessed over him carrying an umbrella everywhere. After she herself passes, he delves into a complete anger and vengeance, now utterly alone, and begins to seek out revenge on everyone having to do with wronging him, including the Wayne family, which had a hand in bringing down the Cobblepot family's power. He begins a life of crime, using his gradually obtained underworld connections and bird friend assistance to his advantage, donning a top hat, tuxedo, umbrella and monocle to feed his delusion that he still has blue-blooded authority. He runs the Iceberg Lounge as a cover location for his criminal empire.

When his father dies as a result of getting involved with the wrong people, he seeks out a career in law, to eliminate the criminal empire and clean up his city. However, things take a nasty turn when one of the vicious members of the crime boss families attempts an assassination on the shining DA by use of deadly acid, the only result ends with horrible scarring down Dent's face, melting one side. Driven over the edge with anger, vengeance and his conditions rising back to the surface, Dent develops a severe case of split personality.
