Herold's Cafe, a coffee shop that most people in this town grew up with since little nibblets walking around not knowing what the world had in store for them.
The sound of clicking heels is what always grabbed unnecessary attention. It rang to naughty ears that a woman with dignity was approaching their way, but silencing any ideas of catcalls once they've noticed the woman was Debra Merington - CEO and founder of Merington Enterprise.
What started out as a small business soon turned out to be one of the leading businesses in Mozambique, one of the poorest countries in the world. As a young child, her ambition was to obtain the position as president and to help the country with its economic demanding, but of course with political corruption, it would have been impossible - as a white woman with ambitions.
Altogether too blind to see that her life could be in so much danger, Sifa Ziungi; was around Debra's age at that time, she knew very little English but could communicate well. She lived in the slums, just like any other citizen.
On a cloudy day, walking to her older brothers; Bertan Ziungi home she noticed that the kids weren't playing outside of the house, she thought that they probably went to go collect firewood. But the area around the house wasn't swept, a regular day to day chore that his girls did when they woke up. The sensation that something was terribly wrong swooped into her mind, adrenaline consumed her body, making her heart beat faster. She ran into the small hut of a home. But, fortunately, she was wrong, her worries kept at bay. Her eyes trailed to Bertan and his 5 kids surrounding the box-like television they bought 4 years ago.
fascinated by what was being said, distracted them so much that they didn't notice the presence of their fellow sister and auntie.
Sifa caught a woman's voice coming from the television. She had an English accent.
"Disgusting." she thought. Sifa always hated the English accent. It held no power or firmness. To her, all English men sounded like drowning rats, and the women sounded more like drowning mice. Not a huge difference. But there was a difference. Ziungi was the first one to run into his aunties arms, maybe too young to understand what was being said. But Sifa always saw him as a smart boy. Most 6-year-olds would be out and about, but Ziungi loved to learn, he always tried to learn hard words. To every new word that he'll learn, he puts it in his vocabulary, making him sound more like a snob than most.
"Greetings auntie Sifa." He looked up at her with seriousness. Pursing his lips to seem more intimidating.
"How is my little fire dragon, hmm?" She bent down on her knees to be eye to eye with him. Something shes learned from watching teachers talking with their much younger students.
"I have grown away from that now, call me the Water King."
"Okay... Well does the Water King still like to be TICKLED!?" She made contact with his armpits, the child in him burst out, laughing hysterically, trying to get away from the torture, and the loud laughter caught everyone's attention.
Leah was the first one to land a hard hug. She was the oldest, and because of that, she held a lot of responsibilities. After their mother passed away, she took over her place, but also accommodated patience along the way.
The family welcomed her into their home and helped her get something to eat, the traditional cassava and rice. Once finished eating they all ran back to the T.V, Sifa following behind. "Debrah Merington" was the first thing she heard, then later understood that she was trying to run for president.
Bertan's laughter echoed through the room and sparked his kids to laugh alongside him. "This girl is going to die the by the following week just see."
His rudeness caused his sister to glare at him. But he glared back daring a competition. Sifa looked away and turned her attention back to the T.V, but Bertan continued with his words.
"She's either going to die or escape this country, there's no in-between Sifa. And plus what is she trying to gain to become the president of Mozambique. There are much more approachable countries for a woman of her color to become president, they will kill her by next week I promise you that, and they'll do it slow and painful..." Sifa muted his voice and kept listening to the news reporter talking about the woman. She looked 50 around of age, "too young to die" she thought.
At some point of Betran's complaints about the woman; he said something that sparked her interest,
"she's coming to visit Gurue in 2 days."
She didn't know this woman but was already captivated. She was already a woman with fame, and she would be the first celebrity that Sifa has ever met if she meets her that is.She stayed at their house until dawn, obsessing over the woman known as Debra Merington, changing to every Chanel talking about this woman, and so at home, getting ready for bed she came up with a crazy dream herself; Sifa decided to spark a relationship with the fascinating Debra Merington, and warn her about the kind of country she insists on helping.
