We beat Shay to his car even though his class was closer than ours. It turned out that Liz was sick and hadn't come to school.
"Why haven't you been talking to me?" I falsely pouted. Nothing.
I took the passenger seat and Casey had claimed the seat directly behind me, the farthest from Shay in the close confines.
The tension was so thick, I thought I would choke on it. "You two need to kiss and make up. This argument thing is getting old."
All I got was a snort from Shay and the sound of movement from Casey.
"Guys, I can almost hear the two of you thinking bad things about each other."
When we were near my house and neither had said anything, I snapped commandingly, "Shay. Stop the car."
I'm not sure which of us three were most surprised as he actually did it.
Shay hid his surprise with annoyance and anger, "What?"
This only irritated me. "Magic boy, you need to stop being so upset at wolf boy before I kick your ass, and no magic spell will be able to save you. Me knowing is important. And the two of you are gonna help me figure out what is up with the damn vampire that has tried to attack me twice!" By now I was out of breath.
Casey had moved over so he could see my face. "Twice?"
Shay was staring like I'd grown a second head. "Vampire?"
Oh, yeah. Shay didn't know about the vampire since he and Casey weren't speaking and Casey didn't know about the first time I was approached by the vampire. Intelligently, I said, "Uhhh."
"Why didn't you say anything!" they exclaimed in unison. At least they were agreeing on something.
"Wasn't important," I mumbled, rethinking a few recent choices as my attention bounced between the green and brown sets of eyes staring at me with unconcealed irritation.
"Explain," Casey demanded.
I was about to pull Evasive Maneuver Zak and run when Shay snapped his fingers and the doors locked. Now I was magically trapped.
After staring at the door like it insulted my cousin, I conceded. "Fine," I told them and proceeded to tell them about the pale man I saw when I had seen the first wolf (I had decided it was Zak). After that, I told Shay about what had happened at Casey's house.
"You told her?" Shay sounded outraged.
After they had argued a few minutes, I snapped at the two of them, "I would've found out anyway."
Shay blinked a few times before admitting, Yeah, but we aren't supposed to flat out tell someone that doesn't know."
"Which would you have preferred? Me finding out or me being told by ine of you? Lies or truth here, Shay."
"Putting it that way..." He trailed off. "Wait. I saw Casey's car. Why did you need a ride?"
I glanced at Casey, who seemed uneasy with the question, and answered, "His cousin, the new senior, knows I know and was trying to force Casey into telling him something."
"So we chose to run and avoid him all day," Casey mumbled.
Blinking at me, Shay questioned, "Why did you run?" Turning to look at Casey, he asked, "You live with him right?"
I hadn't thought of that.
Apparently Casey hadn't either, "Shit! He might also tell Keenan."
"Who?" I wondered.
