At first the people behind the movie thought that Shailene Woodley (22) was to old to play 16 year old Hazel. At the time Hailee Steinfeld was considered for the role. Shailene Woodley then spent 5 hours writting a letter to John Green and another to director Josh Boone arguing that she was not too old to play Hazel.
