Clare’s eyes fluttered open, her head pounding as the hangover begun to kick in almost immediately.
“What the fuck” Clare muttered, looking around the unfamiliar room.
“Where am I” she asked herself as she sat up and tossed the sheet from her body.
“Oh you’re awake” Ashton chirped, flashing a small smile in Clare’s direction.
“Oh my god…” Clare breathed and cursed, placing her hand to her mouth and backing away from Ashton slowly.
“Cla- Clare relax, nothing happened… well it was going- but you fell asleep” Ashton tried to explain, taking small steps towards her his intention to not freak her out.
She pulled her hand away from her mouth, letting out a deep exhale. Clare wasn’t usually the one to wake up in a complete stranger’s house; she had morals and respect for herself.
“Well thank you, for you know… not taking advantage of me” She mumbled, taking a seat back down on the bed.
“Well, you’re uh… Welcome?” He replied confused, unsure of what to say.
Ashton took a seat beside Clare, holding a glass of water and panadol. He moved the two closer to her, gesturing her to take it.
Clare took both and placed the panadol on her tongue and washed it down with a swig of water.
“Thanks uh…” Clare dragged out, thinking back desperately to last night with a hint of hope to remember his name.
“Ashton, Ashton Irwin” he said softly, snapping Clare out of her thoughts.
“I’ll remember that… you know… now I’m sober” She chuckled nervously, flashing a small toothy grin.
“Well do you, wanna come down and get some food? I know a pretty good place that sells a pretty mean hangover breakfast?” Ashton asked, his gaze lifting to meet hers.
Clare stood up to follow Ashton down, taking a quick look at herself in the mirror in the hallway.
“Uh, Ashton.. Can I quickly get cleaned up before we head out?” She asked nervously, her fingertips playing with the hem of her shirt.
“Sure, bathrooms through that room… first door on the right” He said, leaning up against the wall.
Clare nodded and entered the bathroom, fixing her hair and her makeup that she always had left in her handbag.
Ashton walked around the house, making sure he had locked everything up before they both left.
“I think I’m good to go” she said, placing her handbag over her shoulder.
Ashton nodded, leading her out the front door and locking it behind him. They both strolled down the street, ending up about a hundred metres or so away from Ashton’s flat.
“Ashton, so lovely to see you” The waitress chirped, engulfing Ashton in a tight hug.
“Sara, didn’t know you were working back here again” He chuckled nervously, letting go of her small waist.
“Yeah, the new job I had wasn’t doing too well” She mumbled, as she cursed quietly under her breath.
“Well can we get a table for two, preferably a booth” Ashton smiled, placing his arm around Clare.
“Well… Ashton Irwin not eating alone for once in his life, what are the odds?” She joked, leading them to an empty booth.
Sara disappeared after handing the pair menus. Clare looked the menu up and down before looking up at Ashton who was scanning the laminated paper also.
“So what’s this breakfast you talk oh so fondly of” Clare spoke up, breaking the silence that was making Clare uncomfortable.
He placed his menu on the table, pointing to a combo thing that was at the top of the list.
“This, this is the masterpiece that is breakfast” He grinned, his dimples becoming prominent.
Sara came back to the table asking Clare and Ashton what they would like to eat; Ashton ordered them both the breakfast that Ashton had made out to be ultimate breakfast of breakfasts.
“So, tell me a little about you” Ashton said, gesturing towards Clare. Her eyes met with his as she drummed her fingers against the table.
“What do you want to know?” She asked, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
“Tell me something interesting about you” He said, leaning back against the cushioned booth.
“There’s nothing really interesting about me” Clare replied, shrugging her shoulders slowly.
“What do you do, like as a job?” He asked, finally refining his question to something less broad.
“I’m kind of in-between jobs at the moment” She said, looking down at her hands in her lap.
“I got fired the other day, the reason that I ended up at the club last night” She said, looking back up at Ashton.
“What happened?” He asked curiously, leaning his elbows against the table to show his interest.
“My boss, the prick… told me that if I didn’t sleep with him that he’d fire me” she scoffed, placing her hands back on the table as she remembered everything that had happened the previous day.
“Clare, I’m so sorry that happened” he replied, placing his hand on top of hers.
Clare smiled; Ashton had generally taken an interest in her and not for what she could do for him. She chuckled softly to herself thinking about how much of an unusual way this was to make a new friend, if Ashton even wanted to be friends with her.
“Here you go your breakfast!” Sara said enthusiastically, placing the plate down in front of the pair… pulling Clare back into reality.
“Thank you” Clare said softly, receiving a nod back from Sara as she walked back to the counter.
Clare took a bite of her ‘Ultimate Breakfast’ Sandwich and a moan escaped her mouth.
“Oh my god, I feel as if Satan created this because it’s too good to be heavenly” She said quickly, taking a quick breath.
Ashton swallowed his food before letting out a loud laugh, causing people around them to stare in their direction.
“I told you Clare, this is the best breakfast ever” He said, pointing to his sandwich.
“Well maybe after this best breakfast ever, I could show you something else that’s simply the best” She replied, a smile plastered from cheek to cheek.
“I’d like that” he replied, before the pair returned to eating their breakfast in a comfortable silence.
