“Goodbye Brooklyn.” He had said before walking out.
“Please don't leave me! I don't want to be alone!” I had run after him and grabbed his arm, tears running down my cheeks. This wasn't the first time he's left me, but it gets worse each time. “Please!”
“Oh get over yourself.” He yanks his arm away and walks off, leaving me alone- again- sobbing in front of my house.
~~~
Beep-Beep Beep-Beep
A groan escapes my lips. I sit up and immediately go to the mirror. My blonde hair forms a crazy bird's nest atop my head. I wipe the sleep from my blue eyes. I pick up my cell phone-
8:06am
“Crap!” Along with the time 11 missed messages sit on my lock screen.
Rachel:Where are you?
Rachel:You're going to be late!
Rachel:Jacob is not going to be pleased!
Rachel:Hurry!
Rachel:Did you oversleep again?
Rachel:Sleep is going to get you fired.
Rachel:Brooke
Rachel:Brooke
Rachel:Brooke
Rachel:Brooke
Rachel:I have your breakfast on my desk, swing by when you get here
Rachel officially wins the best friend award. I scramble to gather myself, yanking on the work uniform we're required to wear. White blouse, dark blue pencil shirt, and freaking black high heels that would make anyone afraid of heights. I curse under my breath as I trip over Christine, my snowy cat, “Dang It Chris! Jacob is already going to kill me, I don't need your help!” I immediately feel bad, so I bend down and pet her. “I filled your bowl, and I'll be back tonight.” She purrs against my hand just as I pull it away. I grab my purse and run to work- terrible idea.
~~~
“You're late.” Rachel looks from her computer, deep brown eyes burning through my skull; red hair draped over her shoulder.
“Gosh, I'm sorry.” I whisper and grab the tan paper bag she holds out to me.
“Honestly I expect more.” She sighs and goes back to typing, “Jacob is waiting for you in his office.”
I feel my face go warm, I always feel so awkward when I go to Mr. Jacob Miller's office. But nonetheless, I turn and walk to his office.
~~~
“You're late.” Mr. Miller's soft, firm voice says as I walk in. He sits at his desk, his neat brown hair seems to shine in the dimly lit office.
“I'm so so sorry, Sir.”
He doesn't even bother looking at me as he holds out a stack of papers, “Finish this paperwork by the end of the day.”
“Yes sir.” I take the stack from him, turn, and walk out. Yes it was short; our encounters often are.
~~~
My vision goes dark and warmth covers my face, “Guess who,” A familiar voice breathes on the back of my neck.
I giggle a bit and drop my pen, “Come on Colin, cut it out.” I manage to pry his off my eyes and he rests them on my shoulders.
“Good morning, Miss. Belfast.” He greets me in his cheery tone.
I scoff and push him off causing him to resort to leaning against my desk. I push my roller chair back so I can look at the entirety of his body. He was wearing denim jeans, white T-shirt, and his black hair a mess as always. I wouldn't dare cross my legs in fear of exposing myself to him- then I'd be vulnerable to him; that's the last thing I want- so I tuck one leg behind the other, “You're not in uniform.” I whisper, folding my hands in my lap.
“And you are. Your point?” He raises an eyebrow and leans forward.
“Colin, You're acting creepy again.” I warn him.
“Come on, Brooke, Don't be like that.” He pouts, “Would you like to go for a drink tonight?”
I know he's a creep sometimes, but I still trust him. Colin and I have been friends since I started working here. “Alright. I accept your offer.” I stop as flashbacks of me screaming and crying fill my mind. My blue eyes flash to Colin's handsome face, my lips pursed, “As long as it's not a date.”
His face flashes serious and he nods, “Of course.”
He knew, of course he did, this was Colin I was talking about.
We share a smile and he leaves with a wave.
