Prolouge: Meeting in the Cove
Hiccup's POV
I grabbed my hair in frustration and groaned. Dragon training is tomorrow and I don't even have a dragon! It's bad enough I'm literally the tiniest person in the village, I don't even have a dragon. Snotlout and the twins will never let me hear the end of this.
I hugged my knees to my chest and started sobbing, thinking about the horrors they could do to me. All the pain and neglect they gave me all these years. If only my mom was still alive.
Toothless' POV
I stared at the body in front of me. My mom's ocean blue eyes stared into my little acid green ones. A weak purr escaped her throat as she gave me a reassuring smile.
Blood flowed from her neck and stomach where arrows punctured them. I remember what happened as clear as day.
The hunters. She jumped in front of me. Thuds. Then we were flying away.
She brought her forehead to mine, letting out a soft whine of goodbye. My mother licked my cheek one last time, before she fell silent, her head falling to the floor.
Tears welled in my eyes, and I bolted out the damp cave I was in. I roared in anguish. I was not physically hurt, but why do I feel like I was stabbed in the heart repeatedly?
Third POV
The small black dragon ran and ran. Tears flowed freely from her tightly clenched eyes, which was why she did not see the large indent on the ground.
She glanced around and realized she was in a bowl-shaped cove, with a waterfall to her left leading down to a pond and a bunch of small boulders to her right.
Normally, she would just fly out like her mother taught her. But before she could, she heard whining. Like the sound of a distressed animal.
Slowly, she peeked around a large boulder and her blood ran cold at what she saw.
A human.
Instantly, her mind flashed to the hunters that killed her mother. She could feel herself tremble, and her instincts screamed at her to run.
That was, until she realized, the whimpering was coming from the human in front of her. He was crying, she realized.
She was starting to feel bad for the poor boy. Whatever he was crying about must be terrible. She knew how that felt, especially when she was crying just like him a few moments ago.
Slowly, she crept towards the boy as to not startle him. She didn't notice a small branch until she stepped on it.
Hiccup's head shot up to look at the 'intruder' and his eyes widened in fear. He scrambled back and ended up falling on his rump with a yelp of fear.
Hiccup's heart was beating a mile per hour, pumping gallons of blood throughout his body. He stared at the small black dragon, about the size of a dog, and Toothless stared back at Hiccup with the equal amout of fear.
Then it was as if an unknown bond had formed between them. They simultaneously took a few steps towards each other and hugged.
Neither of them knew what they were doing, nor why. But it just felt...right. It was as if they already knew each other for a long time.
Suddenly, a purple chain wrapped itself around Hiccup's wrist. Hiccup's eyes snapped opened, but he couldn't seem to move, and by the looks of things neither could Toothless. The other end of the chain wrapped itself around Toothless' neck, but barely touching her skin.
Hiccup sucked in a breath. He heard about these. It was a Bonding Ceremony, an event where a human bonds with a dragon and becomes partners. But he definitely did not initiate the ceremony, in fact, he didn't even think about it until this happened.
Before he could even cancel the ceremony, the purple chain dissipate into thin air and both dragon and human were covered in a green and purple-ish aura.
Judging by the look on Toothless' face, she too understood what had happened.
"I-I'm so s-sorry. I d-don't know what happened." He stuttered out. Because of him, the dragon could be bound to him for all her life!
"You see, we were just hugging for some reason when...what are you staring at?" He asked, noticing Toothless focusing on his hand.
He followed the dragon's gaze and turned his hand around. He gasped. There, on the back of his palm, was a curled up version of the exact same dragon in front of him.
He gulped and gave Toothless an apologetic glance. "Sorry, but I think you're gonna be staying with me for a while."
The dragon tilted his head curiously, wondering why the human was apologizing. As far as she could tell, it was an accident and wasn't anybody's fault.
