Selene's POV
Damn it. I promised myself I wouldn't draw myself any attention, but look where that got me! A handful of students saw me yell at one of the most popular guys in school. I kept my head down for the rest of the day, still not used to being in school again. I slightly got the hang of going to each class, but with all the classrooms, different numbers and letters, I was tardy for one or two classes. I hadn't seen Hailey during brunch or lunch, which made me wonder if she was okay, but I realized I really did not care. I also did not see that douchebag, something I was slightly grateful for.
I just wanted to finish this stupid mission.
Currently, I was sitting at the back of my biology class, trying to catch on to everything the teacher was saying, but at one point or another I zoned out. There was really no point since I joined this school half way through the school year and did not understand a word of what he was saying. Finally, when the bell rang, I rushed out of the class, the school, the whole place and headed back to my hotel room which became more comfortable as the week passed by.
Today was the first day of school and luckily I prepared during winter break, making sure I had everything I needed to survive not only high school but also anything I might come across. I was already looking for a dangerous ex-con. Who knows what I might stumble upon?
I kicked off my shoes upon entering and dropped my school backpack on the floor before laying down on the bed. Before I knew it, I dozed off.
--
I woke up startled, trying to catch my breath as my body trembled. I had the same nightmare as usual. I pushed the thought as a far away from me as I could as I glanced at the clock on the nightstand which glowed 8:06 p.m in red. I got out of the bed and slipped into an oversized sweater from my new wardrobe in the hotel closet, putting on my shoes after and taking a twenty bill from the stack which keeps decreasing slowly. I stepped out of the the hotel room, the cold air impacting me with more force than I anticipated. I took a deep before making my way down to the nearest street, calling for a cab.
One stopped right in front of me and I entered in.
"Hey," I greeted him, "can you take me to that one drugstore near that large theater where big lights light up the place?"
I tried explaining the place as best as I can and it seemed he understood it. I'm so glad I toured this new city before starting school. The place seemed nice, comfy. I memorized where everything was but not the names of the store. Always had a trouble of doing that.
"Yeah, sure," he responded before shifting into gear and driving. It wasn't long before he stopped in front of the exact store I meant.
"Can you wait here as I go in and get something? It'll only be a minute before I come back," I told him. He looked at me through the rearview mirror and nodded. I thanked him before getting out of the cab with my backpack in hand.
A bell rang as I entered the drugstore. A light in the middle of the store flickered. I walked in between the aisles, heading toward the bakery and bread section. My old boots squeaked against the white floor. Once I found my destination, I looked at the different sweets splayed in front of me. Cookies, Twinkies and cupcakes. Bingo. I grabbed a box with a chocolate cupcake decorated with rainbow sprinkles on the top; my favorite. I went to get candles, a match, some bandages and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide to wash out my new wound before making my way to the cashier.
The cashier did not notice me until I placed the items on the counter. He glanced from the book he was reading at the items before at me. When he made eye contact though, his eyebrows scrunched together.
"$8.60 is your total," he told me. I reached in my back pocket and handed him the twenty dollar bill. He opened the cash register, got my change and handed it to me. "Have a pleasant day," he called out after me as I exited the store.
I scoffed at his statement.
I entered the cab once again and he drove me back to the hotel. I entered the hotel room, tired and glad I had no homework from school, not that I would have done it anyway. I took of my shoes like always before sitting on the chair and taking out the components I brought from the drugstore. Carefully placing the blue candle on the frosting of the cupcake, I lit the candle with the match. It lit up the entire room. A faint smile spread across my lips. My eyes glistened in the dark, but no tears fell down.
"Happy birthday to us," I sang quietly. "Happy sweet, sweet 18." Before blowing out the candle, I whispered a silent wish. "I wish I was different."
As I was about to take a bite, the moon through the curtains caught my attention. It was blood red. Beautiful.
The cupcake tasted amazing, but my stomach only grew hungrier as I continued to stare at the moon. Something about it wouldn't let me look away from it. I tried to but it was as if I was physically bound to my place. As I continued to look at the moon, I began noticing something. It was like a shadow, but it looked like something. It looked like a...
A wolf?
No way, I was going crazy. It looked like a grey shadow of a creature on the moon, so I guessed my eyes were deceiving me. But then the creature moved. It was a if it was real. I tried to tear my eyes off of it but nothing worked. The creature looked at me, its body forming from its head to it's tail, looking similar to a dog. It grew closer and closer as it ran toward where I was sitting until it stopped right in front of the hotel window. The creature snarled, revealing long razor-sharp teeth lining its mouth as its tongue darted outward, gingerly licking each and every single one of them. It looked exactly like a wolf, but larger and scarier
I really tried to get out of the chair but nothing worked. I struggled in my own body as the wolf stood outside the windows, that is, until it stepped into the room. A strong current blew the curtains as they fluttered around the window. Alarmed and trying to find to find a way out, I watched as the wolf bent down and pounced, right at me. I closed my eyes shut, waiting for its claws to sink into my skin but nothing happened.
Slowly, I peeled my eyes open and tried moving once more. It worked. I stood up, trying to figure out what was happening. Thinking quickly, I ran towards the bed and took out a couple of daggers from underneath the pillow. I kept myself calm as I scanned the room, but I couldn't find the creature.
I moved across the hotel room, opening the closet, the bathroom, analyzing every inch of the room. When I couldn't find anything, I relaxed. I made my way to the sink and washed my face. I really had to snap out of it.
However, as I raised my head to look at the mirror, what I next saw couldn't be describable.
It was right there.
Merged with me.
The instant my eyes thoroughly looked at it, a rippling pain overtook my body. I screamed in agony, my back arching, my hands shaking. Unable to keep myself steady, I fell, curling into a ball on the carpet floor. My body shook as wave after wave of pain hit me from my toes to my head. I yelled and screamed, trying to get everything to stop. A headache pierced through my head. I grabbed my head in an attempt to stop everything, but it only made it worse. Tears sprang to my eyes.
My body repeatedly hit different objects as I rolled around the floor, my knees curling as the pain would not go away. My eyes kept flickering open and closed. The pain was overwhelming. Flickers of memories scratched my head, making themselves known. I barely heard the door of the hotel open, when the last thing I saw was blue eyes.
The same blue eyes from that night.
