Bass pounded violently in Raven's ears. As she stood on the platform waiting for the train, she customized her playlist. Only the wildest songs would be accepted. Just as she was deciding whether Rock and Roll All Night belonged, a hand swept in front of her face. Elva.
"What?" Raven asked irritably, pulling out an earbud.
"The train's here."
"So?" She stuck her earbud back in.
Elva yanked it out. "So we have to get on."
Raven put the earbud back in, but headed towards the train door. The song ended and she could hear Elva saying,
"Please try not to be completely annoying."
"Annoying? Who me?" She smirked.
"Yes, you." Elva huffed. "Please."
Elva's desperate expression gnawed at her. "Fine."
Relief spread across her face like spilled water on paper. "Thank you."
Raven shrugged.
As she boarded the train, she looked for a seat. There was only three available. One next to a women with a baby, one next to an old man, and one next to a boy about her age with mischievous eyes and a dimples. Elva frowned when she saw him, but Raven smiled and sat down next to him.
"Hey," he said, "you can't sit here."
"Why?"
"Because."
"Because why."
"Because I said so."
"That means a lot." She rolled her eyes.
"Look, you just can't sit there."
"Tell me why, and if it's a good reason I'll move."
"Cause I don't like you."
She raised an eyebrow. "And why not?"
"Your eyes."
"What's wrong with them?"
"Um, they're red."
"That's all?"
"No."
"Tell me."
"Your sister has purple eyes."
"That all?"
"Are you guys witches? If so I don't want to sit by you."
Raven laughed at his honesty. "No, we're not witches."
"Then why are you like that?"
"Because," Raven summoned a ball of fire in her hands, "they represent our power."
The boys eyes widened. "Who are you?"
"Raven."
The boy got up and scurried down the aisle. "Your sister can have my seat," he called over his shoulder.
Elva looked up from her book. Raven patted the seat next to her. Sighing, Elva packed up her belongings and moved next to her.
"What was that about?" She asked.
"I have no idea." Before Elva could protest, she popped in her earbuds and shut out the world.
