I found myself back to my room, crying, still feeling the loving arms of my beloved. I stared at my pinky finger, around it was a black thread leading to nowhere but to a remnant of the past--the person I love.
It was more agonizing that after that, I never saw the antique shop where I bought the hourglass again. It was suddenly closed and moved somewhere else. My only chance to get back to him was absolutely gone.
Years passed and I got my bachelor's degree, but there was no moment when I ever forgot him.
I went to Tokyo to find a work there and almost lost my breath in surprise when I saw the same antique shop right before my eyes, standing alone in one of the corners, almost hidden from everyone's sight. How magical. How high suddenly my hope surged. Slowly, I went inside it; heart hammering inside my chest.
"Ah," said the old owner of the shop I met before, "it's finally time. Here's a gift for you from grandpa, grandma." It was then that I noticed that the old man's eyes and smile were the same as Osamu's. He very carefully handed to me a box filled with hundreds of hourglasses in different sizes. Some larger than the others. My eyes were filled with tears. The old man--my gosh, our grandson--gently wiped away my tears. "What do you think about your daughter's work? She even designed those better than the first one."
"They are wonderful. Very," I replied, then immediately took an hourglass from the bunch and turned it again.
Let our time continue.
Until the last grain of sand falls.
