"You sure we should do this, Rach?"
I looked out at the waves, crashing treacherously against the rusty surface of the pier. The clouds were dark and full, but the sky was quiet. Silence swept across the lake. The calm before the storm. I ignored the fear that twisted my stomach in knots. This was our time.
"We can't be scared forever, Ava. It's the end of senior year for christ's sake," I laughed, trying to keep my voice from shaking.
"I know, but... I want to make it to college... alive," Ava mumbled.
I faced her and placed my hands on her shoulders. "Listen, we've been looking forward to this moment for years. Ever since junior high. You're my best friend and I wouldn't want to jump off the pier with anyone else on any other day."
Ava nodded.
"Now let's cross that last thing off our bucket list before college and face our fears together!" I realized I was shouting now, as the wind's howling grew louder. The storm was starting, which brewed even more fear inside of me.
Ava grinned. "Alright!"
Ava grabbed my hand and I squeezed my eyes shut. "To senior year!" I shouted as we both leaped off the tallest pier on lake Michigan.
The universe doesn't always work out in your favor. When I jumped off that pier, I had no idea that fifteen minutes later I would lose my best friend and a whole lot of respect from every single person within a thirty mile radius of my house. I had no idea that my dumb mistake would ruin an entire family- my best friend's family who was basically my second family to be exact. Fifteen minutes ago I thought that I was a rebel, a C student, that girl who always skips gym class, even a failure. Fifteen minutes ago, I thought I had nothing to lose. Until I lost everything.
