Chapter Three
-----
Tony popped his head in Kiera's bedroom the following night with a goofy look on his face.
"What's up with you?"
"Nothing," he all but giddily replied.
"You're lying."
"So what if I am."
"I hate it when you lie to me," she said, "So, really, what's going on?"
"Phone's for you."
"Who is it?" she questioned.
The look only got goofier. "Kasey."
Her eyes grew wide, and her hands subconsciously traveled to her head, to make sure she didn't have bed head. It was as if he were there in person and not on the phone.
"How did he get our number?"
"I don't know," Tony lied.
"You're lying again."
"Just take the phone and talk to him," Tony told her, thrusting the phone at her, and shutting the door behind him. But he didn't leave fully yet, instead, pressing his ear up against her bedroom door, and listening to the conversation once again.
"Hello?"
"Hi Kiera."
"Kasey. How are you?"
"I'm pretty good," he told her, mentally thinking Pretty good, but really nervous. Whoever thought a girl could make me feel this way. It's never happened before. "How are you?"
"I'm okay."
"Well, that's good."
She heard a slight shuffling outside the door, and knew that Tony was right outside. Then she whispered, making sure Tony wouldn't be able to hear her. "Listen play along with me, okay?"
"Okay," Kasey answered hesitantly.
"It's just my brother is right outside my bedroom door, and he's listening to the entire conversation, so I want to mess with him a little."
"As long as he doesn't try to kill me, I'll play along."
"Don't worry, I'll say it was all my idea."
"Okay."
"Here we go..." she told him.
"Come over to your place tonight?" she questioned, "Sure I'd love to."
"Shit Kiera," Kasey swore, "Please tell me you're not going where I think you're going with this conversation."
She laughed, "You're so funny Kasey. So, what did you have in mind tonight?"
He groaned. I am as good as dead.
"Get me drunk and take advantage of me?" she questioned, "Sure, that sounds like a wonderful plan for the night." Kiera could hear noise coming from outside the door, and knew her brother would bust in there very soon.
"Are you trying to have your brother come after me Kiera?" Kasey questioned, "Ugh. I'm dead. Might as well have as good of a week as I can, because come this weekend at Rockingham, I'm dead by the hands of Tony Stewart."
As if on cue, Tony burst through the door, his face fire red, and Kiera burst out laughing. "I know that'd get you Tony," she laughed, "You're such an easy target when it comes to me."
Tony stopped, mid-stride and squinted at Kiera, "That wasn't real?"
"Hell no," Kiera laughed, "You honestly think I'd let someone get me drunk and take advantage of me? Do you have no faith in me, Tony?"
"I'm going to kill him!" Tony exclaimed, and Kasey froze.
"I told you he'd blame me, Kiera," Kasey told her.
"No, Tony, you have it all wrong," Kiera spoke up, "It was my idea. In fact, Kasey didn't even want to go through it; I was the one that convinced him to do it."
"Kiera, I need to talk to you," Tony said, and to Kasey it sounded like he was mad.
She turned her back on him, and continued her conversation, "Kasey, can I call you back?"
"Sure."
"I've got to deal with my dumbo of a brother first."
"Okay," Kasey said, reciting his number to her, "I'll talk to you in a little while."
"Bye Kasey."
She turned back towards Tony and smiled. "Hi Tony."
"Why would you do that?" he demanded.
She rolled her eyes, "You know, sometimes I do actually enjoy privacy. Not always having someone listen to my phone conversations. I'm a big girl Tony, even if Kasey did try something, I'm sure I'd be able to handle myself. I am almost twenty-one, you know."
Tony sighed, and sat down on the side of her bed, "I just worry about you sometimes, you know?"
"I know," she replied sadly, "We've been left to fend for ourselves, and you've always raised me since we were younger. But, I can handle myself now Tony, I have to be able to, or I'm never going to be able to grow up."
"Fine," he replied, "I do trust you, you know."
"I know, and hopefully you'll learn to trust Kasey too. I've known him for almost a year, and he's a great guy, and if anything ever does happen between us, you're going to have to learn how to deal with that. Can you do that?"
"I can try."
"That's better than nothing," she nodded, kissing his cheek, "Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a cute boy to call back."
"And I'll leave you alone," Tony told her.
"Good."
"And I won't be listening from outside your room this time, I promise."
"Thank you."
"I love you Kia."
"I love you too Tiger," she smiled, and the door closed.
She collapsed on her bed and picked up the phone, dialing Kasey once again.
-----
"Hello?"
"Hey Kasey."
"Is everything okay now?" he asked.
"Yeah, everything's fine."
"And I'm not going to be dying at the track this weekend?"
She chuckled, "As long as you behave yourself, you won't being getting killed."
"That's good to know," he joked, "I had to make sure I didn't have to write up my will, or else ..." He cut himself off, when he realized he had never even gotten the chance to ask her out like he wanted to.
"'Or else' what?"
He breathed. "Or else I wouldn't be able to ask my next question."
"And what's that?"
"Do you maybe, possibly want to do something with me tomorrow?"
She laughed, he sounded adorable when he stumbled and stuttered over a question like that. "I'd love to."
"Good."
"Now, for real this time, what did you have in mind."
He chuckled, "Well, I was thinking, maybe dinner?"
"Dinner sounds awesome."
"So be ready at seven? And I'll come pick you up."
"Okay Kasey, I'll be ready."
"Good," he replied, "Oh, and wear something nice."
She laughed, "What are you planning?"
"You'll see, it's a surprise."
"You shouldn't have told me that now," she told him, "Now I'm going to be anxious."
"Haha. Well, it will be worth it."
"It better be," she playfully said.
"I'll make sure it is," he stated, "Now I hate to cut this short, but I have a meeting with Ray that I have to get to."
"Okay Kase."
He smiled. She called me Kase.
"I'll see you tomorrow Kiera."
"Yep, tomorrow," she smiled, "Bye."
"Bye."
She hung up and flopped back on her bed. I'm going on a date with Kasey Kahne.
"Kiera?" Tony's voice broke through the door, "Is it safe to come in without being accused of listening to your phone calls?"
"Yes Tony," she replied, "I'm off the phone."
"Good."
He walked in to find her sprawled across her bed, her hands above her head, the phone resting next to her hand and a huge grin on her face.
"So?"
"'So' what?"
"Well, what's the verdict?" he questioned, "What did Kasey have to say?"
"Like that's any of your business," she scoffed playfully.
"I'm your brother, it is my business."
"Not if I say it's not," she turned as he lay down next to her, and began tickling her.
"Tony! Tony! Tony!" She laughed so hard, she was almost crying, and finally, when the tears did begin to fall, he stopped.
"Now tell me."
"What if I don't want to?" she tested.
"You will, or I'll make you."
"Fine," she mock-sighed, "We're going to dinner tomorrow night."
"Ooh!" he said, pretending to be shocked, then jumped up and began to run throughout the house, "Kiera's going out with Kasey."
"Tony, shut up!" she exclaimed.
"Kiera's going out with Kasey!"
"Tony!"
"Kiera's going out with Kasey!"
There was no one to hear him say this, but it was enough to send them both into laughing fits on the living room floor. "You're an idiot," she told him.
"And you're a princess."
She grinned, "Tell me something I don't already know."
He shoved her lightly, "You're terrible."
"And so are you."
"I told you that you liked Kasey, but you wouldn't listen."
"I wasn't going to tell you I liked him, because then you'd do something stupid."
"Would not," he protested.
"Would too."
"Would not."
"Would too."
"Would not."
"Would too."
"Kids, kids, kids!" they heard from behind them, and both sat down to see Junior standing in their living room. "What was this I hear about Kiera going out with Kasey?"
"He called, she said yes. It's happening tomorrow night."
Junior laughed and sat down on the couch, "It's about time that happened."
"Shut up, you two," she said, shoving both of their shoulders, "I'm going to my room."
"See ya Kiera."
As soon as she was out of the room, Tony turned to Junior. "Thanks for coming over."
"Of course, what's up?"
"I got a perfect idea for what we should do on Kiera's birthday."
"What's that?" Junior asked.
"Well, I figured we could throw her a surprise party," Tony explained, "I'm going to see if maybe Kasey can take her out to dinner that night, that way it gives us time to set everything up."
"That sounds like a good idea," Junior agreed, "But will he do it?"
"I guess we'll have to see," Tony replied, picking up the phone, and dialing Kasey's number.
"Hello?"
"Kasey? This is Tony."
"Tony?" Kasey questioned, trying to place why Tony would be calling him, "Is something wrong?"
"No."
"Then why are you calling me?" Kasey asked, silently wondering if he was in trouble, "Oh shit, you're going to kill me for the joke we played on you."
"No Kasey, I'm not," Tony chuckled, "But I do need your help."
"My help?" He was confused. Why did he need his help? "What for?"
"I want to plan a surprise party for Kiera Thursday night, since it is her birthday and all, but I need your help in order for it to happen."
"Sure," he replied. If it was for Kiera, he'd do it. "What do you need me to do?"
