Chapter 1: The Bite

 It was Junior Year when it happened. I lived with my parents, Monica and Harvey and siblings: Cassidy, who was 15, and Jordan, who was 12.

Mom and Dad worked at the Vet Clinic here in Lilyfield, so you could guess where my Summer Job was. Did I mention they also own that clinic? 

I wasn't on any sports team at school, but I wasn't one of the less popular kids. I was...more of the 'not popular but not-not popular'. Kinda the 'middle'.

And I wasn't the 'loner' guy either. I had friends. Lucca Fenris and Lydia Churchill.

Lucca and I had been friends since...well, forever and Lydia...pretty much the same. Lucca lived with his Uncle and Aunt, and Lydia's dad worked at the school as one of the coaches for one of the teams.

I was walking home from Lucca's place when it happened. I decided to take a shortcut through the park. I had heard stories about the park being a dangerous place at night this time of year. I thought they were just stories.

Yeah, looking back, should've thought the opposite.

That's when I saw it.

At first, I thought it was a woman playing with her dog. Then the "dog" lifted its head, and I realized it was...basically having the woman as it's meal.

"Holy..." It stood and when I had backed away, I must've stepped on a twig as it jumped from the woman to me with a loud howl. I had made the mistake of turning to run as it sunk its teeth into my shoulder. 

With my free arm, I managed to hit the creature in the face. It definitely didn't like that, judging by the noise it made. As it howled, I screamed.

One or both of us made enough noise to get people's attention, and they came running. The beast heard them and ran off before they could get too close. Those people stayed with me, asking me all kinds of questions, trying to keep me conscious for as long as possible. I managed to stay awake in the park, on the ambulance, and seeing my parents in the hospital. It wasn't until they started treating the bite that I lost consciousness.
