The sky changed its color leisurely, throwing light on the hues of blue scattered over the horizon. Beads of sweat trickled down my forehead as I panted, weary from the long run. A high-pitched scream from a dark alley made its way to my ear, compelling me to plunge into action.
Hesitant to risk my life, I stopped dead in my tracks, contemplating my decision. Reluctantly, I took a small stride towards the shrill voice. I switched on my phone and prepared myself to dial 911 in case things were to worsen. Steadily, I walked up to the turning of the alley.
A shriek almost made its way to my lips upon the sight ahead of me but I used my hand to cover my mouth almost immediately. Pressing my back against the wall, I took deep breaths and embraced myself to quarrel with the robber.
Without much thought, I dove into action, tackling the scrawny burglar to the ground. We grappled for several seconds before I took his arm, twisted it behind his back and kicked him in the shin, giving me enough time to brief the girl to call 911. Adrenaline coursed through my veins, motivating me to pummel him. With a few blows to his face and some to his stomach, I knocked him out temporarily.
I took a wide step back before moving my attention to the frightened girl who was pressed up against a wall in the far corner. I moved towards her, ready to speak to her. "Cowardice is only a habit. By doing something that you are frightened of, you're destroying the stereotypes and the notion you've built. You could've easily tacked him, although your fear got in the way. Let's get you out of here now."
Her fragile body shivered as a result of the panic flowing in her veins. The hesitation was clear as she took the tiniest of steps towards me. A siren from a few lanes down caught my attention, driving me to focus on the noise instead of the girl. The cop car pulled up before the alley merely seconds later, allowing us to release the breaths we'd been unknowingly holding in.
The girl stepped forwards, more confident now, and clarified the situation to the men dressed in blue uniforms. I caught a glimpse of the nods the girl received from the cops before they dismissed her, turning their attention to me. I straightened up, prepared to answer any questions or doubts they had.
They arrested the man, who was still lying unconscious, taking him to the police station. The girl, not so frightened anymore, took a step towards me and thanked me. I bid her adieu and ran back to my house, still bewildered from the incident that arose this early morning. The sky, which was now a light blue, stood still, indicating the start of a new day.
