I'm Annie, From Dance Moms
Chapter 02
Date 9/13/10
Annie was sort of scared to audition in front of Abby. She had never danced in front of her before and Lily said she was strict. Lily and her mom Karen were also auditioning for the show. Hana from one of Annie's classes with Ms. Maisie is also auditioning with her mom Reagan, Alissa with her mom Aimee, and Carlee with her mom Josephine. Those were all the people Annie knew, anyway. They were each in one of her classes with Ms. Maisie.
Annie's mom approved of her staying an hour or so longer each day so she could practice for the audition.
Now, at their house, Annie was eating strawberries with Hayley while watching a kid's show on TV. Annie started to smile as she thought back to when she told Hayley about the audition.
"Hayley, guess what?" She had asked.
"What?" said Hayley.
"I might be on TV with Mommy and you, too. And hopefully Bubba can visit."
"No Daddy?" asked Hayley.
"Hehe, I guess not," said Annie.
"Hayley be there," Hayley had said, pointing to the TV across the room.
"I guess so!"
Annie was now trying to focus on the TV in front of her, but her mind kept racing back to what would be happening on Saturday.
"Annie! Caleb! Time for school!" Ms. Katie, Annie's mom called them.
Annie stood up and looked at the outfit she chose for herself today. She had chosen pink sparkly leggings, a light yellow and light pink plaid skirt, and a gray shirt that said Be You. Annie's hair was in a small bun with a light pink and black headband. She also had her glasses on, but they were fake. She just liked wearing them.
When she got to school her teacher asked the students to write the most interesting thing that went on that weekend and to draw a picture. This was Annie's paper:
Yestrday I went to dance class with Mis. Masy and i mit be in a tv sho.
Today was Annie's first time buying school lunch. She was so nervous that she asked the teacher what to do. Her lip started trembling and her face turned red. Her teacher smiled softly. "Now, sweetie, it's really not that bad! All you have to do is stand in the line until you get your tray and the kind lunch ladies will put food on your tray! And then you'll have to tell the lady at the end your name, and then you're done!" Her teacher smiled down at her with her rosy cheeks and strawberry hair.
Annie smiled her tiny smile back.
Now, most schools don't allow kindergarteners to buy lunch, let alone eat in the cafeteria, but Annie's school lunch had a special program called the Kindergarten Kids. The Kindergarten Kids would be able to purchase a small, healthy meal for $1.50 and the kindergarten class was so small they had their own table. They shared a class with the second grade lunch, who seemed like giants to Annie.
Today's Kindergarten Kids meal was chicken nuggets with apple slices, a cheese stick, and a carton of milk. Annie got her tray and the ladies put the food on it. The lady at the end seemed very stern and serious so Annie smiled her teeth smile so she would lighten up a bit. She did not smile back.
"Hi," said Annie, still smiling.
"Honey, I need your name and room number."
"My name is Annie and my room number is 2," replied Annie.
"No honey, I mean your full name," replied the serious lunch lady.
"Annie LeBlanc," answered Annie.
"Could you spell it?"
"A-N-N-I-E-space-L-E-B-L-A-N-C."
The lunch lady pressed her lips together and said, "No, honey. You're not on here. There's a Caleb LeBlanc, though."
"That's my brother," said Annie.
"There's also a Julianna LeBlanc. Is she your sister?"
"No, that's my full name. My nickname is Annie."
The lunch lady sighed quietly. "Alright Julianna, but please give your real name for these types of things."
Annie sighed.
My real name is Annie.
