I saw a small boy seated at the corner of an alley wearing torn clothes. The boy was shivering like a leaf and he looked like someone who was going to die the next moment.
I pulled over by the roadside and got out of the car then first looked around and slowly began walking towards the boy. When he saw me walking towards him, he wanted to run away but he did not have the strength to.
"Hey, it is okay. I mean you no harm." I said to the boy but he just began squeezing towards the corner.
I then figured that the boy could not be understanding English judging from his state and I decided to try Swahili.
"Jambo, mie naitwa Haman na nimo hapa kukusaidia; usiogope lolote." I said in Swahili.
The boy then gave me a confused look and then he leaned backwards and sighed.
"Chakula! Chakula!" The boy just began whispering and that was when I figured out that he was hungry.
I looked around and saw a restaurant just across the alley and then I looked at the boy and said;
"Kaa hapa niendee chakula naja."
He nodded his head and I hurriedly walked towards the restaurant. I was waiting for the restaurant guy to pack for me the take away food when I heard someone screaming and when I looked across the street, I saw a guy dragging the boy away; he was holding him by the right leg.
I just jumped like a released spring and went racing towards the guy. When he saw me running towards his direction as I shouted at him, he released the boy and ran off.
I did not mind the stinking smell coming from the little boy, I just grabbed him into my arms and carried him to my car.
I then went back to the restaurant, took my order and I took the food to the boy. The poor boy was suffering from malnutrition and one could easily count all his bones; he ate the food with greed then when he was full, he looked at me and said;
"Ahsanti, sijala kwa siku tatu sasa."
I sympathized with him and I decided to take him to a children's home. When we got to the children's home, they refused to take him in unless I first took him to an hospital and have him treated.
I had no choice but to drive the boy to the hospital and on my way to the hospital, I asked him his name and he told me that people called him Duke but he had no idea what his real name was.
He was out with his parents one day when they left him somewhere in a park and told him to stay there and promised that they were going to come back for him, but he never saw them again. He began loitering in the streets not knowing where to go and nobody cared about him; he ended up begging for the bigger street kids for them to allow him to eat and stay in their territory.
Duke had several bruises on his body and from the smell coming from his body, I could tell that he had gone for months without taking a shower, and the bigger boys were assaulting him.
Evaluating his condition, he needed a specialist and therefore I decided to take him to a Children's hospital. When we got to the hospital, I met the doctor at the reception's lobby and she told me that the boy could not be treated unless I had a report from the police; there was no time to start looking for a police statement, he needed immediate medical care.
"Doc, do you have a child?" I asked her sounding pissed.
"Yes Sir I have a daughter and trust me, I really want to help this boy but it is either you are his parent or guardian, or else you have a report from the police indicating that you collected him and he needs medical attention. Am so sorry Sir but those are the hospital and the government polices." She replied calmly.
"Screw policies Doc, imagine this was your daughter in this state and someone was telling you that she cannot be treated, how would you feel?" I asked rudely.
"Sir, my hands are tied here." She replied avoiding my question.
"You know what, just tell me what he needs and I will treat him myself if the people supposed to help him cannot help him." I said bitterly.
The doctor then looked at me with sympathetic eyes then she looked around and said in whispers;
"Come with me sir."
I followed her to her office then she locked the office and said;
"Sir, I do want to help you but I could not tell you this at the lobby because I would risk losing my job. I will write for you a list of everything we shall need then you will go and buy the items. Once you have everything, you will give me a call and I will come over to your place to treat him from there. I cannot treat him from here because of the strict policies; I will be risking a jail term or a fine besides getting fired."
"Thanks Doc, I will highly appreciate." I said calmly.
"As a parent, I know what it means to see a child suffer even if he is not yours; but to avoid getting in trouble, I advice you to process legal adoption for the kid. All you need is a recommendation and an endorsement letter from the hospital and you will take the letter to the Children Services Agency and they will automatically approve your request to adopt the kid and process the adoption documents for you. Also you will need his birth certificate which I assume that you don't have so I will help you with that." She said smiling.
"Thank you so much Doc, God bless you. I think this boy needs someone to take care of him, I will adopt him." I replied smiling back.
I then took the list and together with Duke, we headed to my house. I could not leave him in the house alone, so I gave him a nice warm bath and on my way from the hospital, I had gotten him some clothes; I dressed him nicely and now he looked better although he was really skinny and worn out.
I went with him to shop for the required items for his treatment and since I did not want raising any alarms, I left him in the car with my phone playing games.
I quickly shopped for whatever that the Doctor needed to treat Duke then I headed back to the car.
When I got to the car, Duke was not in the car and so was my phone. He was gone and my phone as well was gone; the car's door was left open hence I did not know if he had just left the car or someone had dragged him out of the car...
