A couple of weeks after Caleb moved in, he and Luna started kindergarten together at the local elementary school. Of course, to Maya and Katie, it was a huge deal.
"Smile for the cameras!" Katie beamed as she and Maya both took pictures on their disposable cameras of the two. Caleb and Luna each held a mini chalkboard that read: "First Day of Kindergarten!"
"They grow up so fast," Maya smiled down at her daughter before bending down and kissing her cheek.
"Mommy!" Luna whined, wiping the pink lipstick stains off her cheek. "It's just kindergarten, it's not like you're giving me away to go marry Caleb or something."
"We're too young to get married," Caleb added before wrapping an arm around Luna's shoulder. "Maybe when we're eighteen, we'll be adults."
"You promise, Cae?"
Caleb smiled. "I promise, Lu."
Maya and Katie cooed and took more pictures of their kids, the two kids groaning and just wishing they could leave the house already.
Katie offered to drive both Luna and Caleb to school since Maya had her nursing shift at the hospital starting soon. Maya kissed her daughter goodbye and wished her luck one last time before Katie drove them away.
"Now you two behave, and have fun on the first day! But not too much fun, don't get into trouble! I'm talking to you, Caleb Logan!" Katie winked before waving at the two kids as they got out of the car.
"This is so exciting! We're like big kids now!" Caleb exclaimed as he ran through the front doors of the school, making sure to hold the door open for Luna; his mom said he should always hold the door open for a girl and be a gentleman.
"There's our class!" Luna pointed to a door on the right, the two of them running in excitedly.
Soon, their excitement washed away once they saw they had assigned seats.
"Hey, no worries, I can just move my name tag," Caleb peeled the sticker off his desk and switched it with the one next to Luna's desk, sitting next to her.
"I'm sorry, sweetie, but we have assigned seats, which means we can't move," the teacher, Mrs. R, said as she grabbed Caleb's name tag. She switched it back with the one he moved, Caleb and Luna both frowning.
"But, Mrs. R, Caleb and I are best friends. We want to sit next to each other," Luna explained.
"Sorry, sweetie, you two can make new friends with the kids that sit next to you," Mrs. R smiled reassuringly, but not enough for the two of them. They decided not to argue though, and waved sadly to each other as Caleb made his way back to his assigned seat on the other side of the classroom.
Soon the day began, Mrs. R teaching them how to write the alphabet and how to count to ten. Luna kept finding herself looking over at Caleb, who was doing what Mrs. R said; making new friends.
He laughed with the boy he sat next to, smiling and practicing counting and spelling each other's names. Luna felt a twinge of jealousy rush through her body; he was her best friend, not his. Who did that boy think he was?
Surely he didn't have a super secret castle playhouse whose password was animal crackers, which automatically made him less worthy of a best friend to Caleb.
After a few hours, Mrs. R had the class line up in alphabetical order to go to lunch. They shuffled along to the cafeteria, a few of the kids swinging around their lunchboxes and others carrying their lunch money. Once they reached the cafeteria and found their table, Luna sat and waited for Caleb to sit next to her.
Caleb grinned and found his way over to her. "Hey Lu, this is my new guy best friend, his name is Luke."
"Hi Luna," Luke smiled and waved at her, to which Luna politely waved back.
"But, Caleb," Luna whispered into his ear. "I thought I was your best friend."
"You are, Lu! Luke is my guy best friend, but you're my girl and overall best friend. We're supposed to get married, remember?" Caleb whispered back.
Luna nodded. "Okay, good, because I like being your best friend."
"I like being your best friend, too," Caleb smiled, pulling Luna in for a hug before taking out his ham and cheese sandwich from his dinosaur lunchbox.
