Refugee

It was 1938 and l was playing a board game like we do every Friday night, when I heard a scream coming from the Landaus house.

"Did you hear that Mother?" My little brother Felix asked. Mother rolled her eyes, "probably just Ruthie throwing another tantrum." But even so she looked worried, and checked.

Unexpectedly, her face went pure white. "What's the matter Mother?" I asked, "I--l--l" she stummered "th--the-y". Father looked at her worryingly, and then checked out the window himself. He gasped, "What's wrong!" I asked impatient. Mother just shook her head, then turned to look at Father, "Hide them" she said "Don't let them see" Father nodded. "See what?" Felix asked, Father tried keeping a calm face. "Now don't you worry, there's nothing to worry about" I could see that he was worried, scared I just didn't know why. Mothers face suddenly went very stern, "Go hide" I looked at her confused, but from the look on her face I could tell she wasn't kidding around.

The next things happened in a rush. We were ushered to the rotting cupboard and told to keep as quiet as possible.Cuddling up close Felix's head looked up at me longingly in the darkness, "What's wrong?" he asked timidly. "I don't know" I replied sadly, "Well you should" Felix said sternly, "Your a big kid" I sighed "Really I wish I did, But sadly I don't." Felix just rolled his eyes, "whatever" he said, I chuckled and kissed his head.

The cupboard was so smelly, It smelled like a dead fish, I tried holding my breath, but no matter how hard I tried the smell filled my lungs. I looked around trying to see where the smell was coming from, but instead I found a hole. Just big enough for me to see what was happening.

Suddenly, I heard a crash coming from the door, my mother and father looked at it, scared. I watched in horror as the door broke away from its frame. Three Nazi Stormtroopers stood right outside, they stormed in tearing everything in their path, even my mothers great-grandmas china set. The one of the stormtroopers grabbed my father by his arm and said in a deep growl " come with us" my father looked horrified, he tried to make a run for it, But the Nazi trooper held onto his arm his grip tightening. I could see my father's face was red with effort. Then suddenly my mother lunged at the stormtrooper, at first the trooper, gasped surprised, then he smiled.All of a sudden my life went into slow mode. He took out his rifle took aim, and shot. I heard my Mother scream in pain then I saw her fall to the floor. Blood covering her chest. Father looked at the Stormtrooper angry, "what was that for?" he asked pain in his voice, the Nazi trooper just smiled and said "you're lucky you don't have kids", then he turned around and said "Come on lads our work here is done" he turned back to look at Father, "and take that filthy Jew with you". I watched in horror as they walked away with my Father, struggling in their hands. As soon as they had left, Felix and I burst out of the cupboard and ran out to check Mother. But it was too late.

Her tangled body lay lifeless on the cold, hard concrete floor...
