The sunshine penetrating through my window woke me up. It looked pretty bright for six thirty, so I peered closely at the electronic clock next to my bed, with my eyes half open. It said 7.30 A.M. I bolted right up. How could I have slept in? My alarm should have beeped an hour earlier. I knew something was wrong. Usually when I slept in, something big would happen.
I clambered out of my duvet and rushed to the bathroom. There was no time to clean my room. I had to get to school by 8.30! I brushed my teeth fiercely and plunged into the tub for a quick shower. It took me ten vigorous minutes inside. I picked my light green floral dress for today. I pulled it over my head, adjusted the sleeves and looked into my closet mirror for an appearance check. It looked fine. My hair looked rumpled and messy. I took my comb from the bathroom and yanked it through my limp strands. The ends were a bit damp, but it didn’t matter. I finally slipped on my brown headband. I looked into the mirror once again, assuring myself that I looked acceptable.
I glanced at my alarm clock again. I said 7.45. I grabbed my shoulder bag lying near my bed and ran down the stairs.
The dining table was laid with breakfast when I walked in. My siblings were already at the table. Mum was pancake making pancakes in her pressed work clothes beneath a messy apron. Mum was a gynecologist and always preferred to multi-task. Noë and Joshua were munching on their favorite cereal whilst discussing their favorites on some TV show. Noëlle was nine, and Josh was eleven. They were at the same school which made it easier for me. I wouldn’t be remotely close to them at school, so Josh could keep an eye on Noë, plus, it is easier for me to drop them every day. I didn’t want Mom to be late for work, considering our situation. Usually, when I can’t make it, I ask Josh’s friend’s mom to drop them back.
I quietly squatted on my chair.
‘Morning, Nellie!’ Mom called from the kitchen.
‘Morning, Mom. Can you give me a pancake fast? Its ten minutes to eight! I don’t want Noë and Josh getting late. And I have to get to school myself!’
‘I know, Nellie. I wanted to come up to your room, but my hands were full with these two. She lost her homework. I had to help her find it.’ She smiled, putting fresh batter to sizzle on the pan.
I nudged Noë in the elbow. ‘How did you lose your homework? Sammy ate it?’ Sammy’s our neighbor, Mrs. Goodwin’s poodle.
‘I don’t know. I left it on Josh’s desk, but it wasn’t here when I checked in the morning. Turns out Josh put it in his bag. Thanks to Mum, I found it.’ She explained in her childish tone.
‘It was silly of you to keep it on my desk, you know?’ Josh interrupted, ‘Nellie, she was being silly, right?’
I ticked his forehead.’ You should have checked the book before you put it in, Josh. But, it’s okay now. Let it go, you two!’ I snapped.
