Y/n: "—hold them off!"
Tooru: "My magic isn't working! [Y/n], fall back!"
Y/n: "Go! I'll buy you some time!"
Tooru: "Yours doesn't work neither!"
Y/n: "I still have my hammer, just go! Relay the message to all cadets!"
The blaring sound of explosions were deafening, but the screams were worse...
It has been three hours since the first attack, for some reasons our magic and comms have failed to function. Cut off from our weapons, the milites soldiers slaughtered their way into the city.
I gripped my hammer as tight as I could, preparing for what seems to be the my final swing. I looked down to my chest and stared blankly at my memory tag.
Y/n: "...better to die fighting, I guess."
The door busts open and I claim the first strike, I swung sideways hitting two infantry men, crushing their pelvis. Another came in and aimed his rifle right in front of me...
Time slowed down as I stared at the barrel. Waiting for it to go off... but it never did.
A flash of purple light had passed by my eyes and hit the enemy soldier knocking him down. I turned around and a brown haired girl jumped down from the roofs and onto the ground holding a pistol on both of her hands. Not a moment later, a guy came running towards us, brown haired, and shorter than most guys in the campus.
Guy: "Are you alright?"
Girl: "Yeah, we came in a little too close but everything's fine!"
Y/n: "T-thanks."
Guy: "No time to explain, you have to come with us."
Girl: "Yeah, mother's order."
Mother? Before I could even ask more questions, they had already taken me by hand and started running. I dropped my hammer in hurry and almost fell on the ground multiple times as we ran faster than I have ever ran. As I trail just behind the two of them, I caught myself thinking too hard on something I should've noticed sooner— their mantles. They were wearing crimson colored mantle, unlike the class ninth's maroon colored, their were definitely crimson red.
Y/n: "Can I ask something?"
I decided to ask as we continue to run.
Guy: "What is it?"
Y/n: "Your mantle... their..."
Girl: "Crimson, yes."
Y/n: "You're the rumored class zero? W-what business do I have with class zero?!"
Girl: "Relax, tall person. As we said, we're only following mother's orders."
Girl: "I'm Cater, by the way."
Guy: "Call me Eight. Nice to meet you."
Y/n: "Ah, nice to meet you too. I'm [Y/N] Malleus."
They smiled at me after the introduction and continued to run.
We arrived at the campus' main door and at the distance I saw a familiar mantle go off the distance— it was Machina. His cape-like mantle is unmistakable. Furthermore, it looks like he's with another cadet, a class seven one, pink mantle.
Cater: "You know them?"
Y/n: "The guy, yes."
Cater: "You should follow them, we'll clean up the streets."
Before I could even protest, they had already stormed off. I looked around and see no one I recognize... as it should be. We don't remember the dead, they said it was a blessing to help the people of Orience to keep fighting. I always thought it was cruel.
I sighed heavily and ran towards the arena, where Machina had went to.
Though I arrived late, I saw the two of them lying on the floor while three other cadets, class zero cadets, are going against a gigantic machine. Just looking at the green light on top of it makes my body weak. It must be the reason behind the unusable magic. I ran as fast as I could and picked up the two of them.
The class seven girl was unconscious, but I safely brought her outside the arena. At least where the battle damage would affect anyone. And I went back there to pick up my classmate.
Machina: "...[Y/n]? What are you doing here? Where's Rem?"
Y/n: "Pink mantle? She's safe, come on, get up."
Machina: "Our classmates, how are they?"
Y/n: "...I can still remember most of them, if that's what you're asking. We were supposed to summon the Bahamut, but shortly after the attack, no one can use magic."
Machina: "It's that machine's doing, a L'Cie is its pilot."
Y/n: "A L'Cie!? Shouldn't we get the hell out of here?"
Our conversation was cut off as a loud explosion went off and we see the three cadets standing by the fire. We just watched in awe, we couldn't believe that three students could defeat a L'Cie.

The three of us walked out of the arena after some time resting. The three students had already left earlier. We were overwhelmed with the sight we saw as we passed by the mounds of corpses lying around the campus.
Rem: "...this is awful."
Y/n: "The empire will pay for this."
Machina: "...even the women and children."
Y/n: "Heartless bastards. They were too busy driving their machines they didn't even took the time to check what they were firing at."
As we walked down the halls, a couple of students were panicking and rushing towards the director's office. Seconds later, a blinding flash had went off and I felt my heart tighten, and blacked out.
"...I seek a strong heart, worthy to be a L'Cie."
"A query; will thou become a L'Cie and free me, the Black Tortoise."
In an endless darkness, I continue to fall. The resonating sound of a mysterious voice remains in my head. An unthinkable reality had flashed through my eyes: destruction and annihilation. And it only went away when I told it...
Y/n: "...I will."
