Chapter Five
“Kyra!” My dad called me from downstairs. I snapped close my laptop and placed it at the end of my bed then went to the kitchen where I found him sitting at the table with a cup of tea in his hand and a straight glare at me.
“Yes, Dad?” I answered, standing around the door.
He smiled at me expectantly, probably waiting for me to ask him something, but I just stayed quietly and stared back. This always happened, it was like our weird little thing.
Finally, he cracked first and looked down towards some pieces of paper in his hands. “I bet you have no idea why I’ve called you down here this time.”
I laughed a little. “It’s usually telling me to get out of the house and find some friends or something which I’m not exactly up to doing. So that’s all I can think.”
I knew he was right every time he told me to do get out a little more, I just didn’t have a reason to go out and my motivation to do so was very limited. Before I use to go out a lot more and was a lot more outgoing – ready for anything and everything than I was now.
My dad passed me the pieces of paper in his hand and I looked at the top first where it stated “LEGAL OCCUPATION OF SUBJECT: ARROW” and the rest of the papers were in miniature font and signature needed right at the bottom of each. I had a feeling I knew what this was about already, but I was holding out that I was wrong for now.
There was a shuffle from my dad and then he sipped his tea then gently placed it back down on the table island. “Kyra, do you understand what this is about yet?”
Yes. I pursed my lips and continued to flip through the papers, there were so many of them and each just had more and more words and I already knew I would spend way too long reading through every single word of every single piece of paper that was in my hands right now.
I shifted my head to the side and finally looked up at him. “I think I do, but you’re going to need to explain this to me from the start, Dad.”
“Ignoring all the negative business involved with this because all that is not where I want this conversation to go; I want you to take over the business for me. It’s expanding bigger and I know you’re not ready to do this single-handedly yet so your uncle will be right there with you. There’s at least 4 clubs open all in my name with your uncle as the Manager,” he explained slowly and calmly. “So after everything is through, I’m going to need a successor and I talked to your sister, but we agreed that she can’t do the job, so right now I’m asking you.” He paused.
“Dad, I can’t-“
“You haven’t tried it, Kyra. I understand you’re still with your studies, but for now, when you’re free I want you to at least try and I know this is extremely different for you and a big change, but I need someone to take the business now that it’s grown,” he continued slowly so he knew I was keeping up. “Months ago, I got the paperwork started and last week everything was settled officially, so now I’m telling you.”
“Why can’t Uncle Simon take over it?” I asked, I had a feeling that it wasn’t something he wanted to hear, but I asked anyway with caution.
“He doesn’t want the business; Arrow has become a family affair and he know he’s part of it, he doesn’t feel as though owning the business is the right thing to do because it was rightfully yours after Callie, but she’s rejected the offer, so it has fallen to you, sweetheart,” he said with a hopeful look in his eyes.
I could feel my throat clogging up because I had never had this much pressure on me, I wasn’t good around responsibility and watching eyes on me. I knew my dad had worked for years to make the business a success and now it was, but he couldn’t even stay alive to watch his work grow even more. It always came down to this, always came down to his pathetic illness. But I couldn’t mention it.
