The Eye

Percy wanted to turn around and run. He had never seen so many monsters gathered in one place before, and he had been to Tartarus. Annabeth stood next to him and he wondered if she was as nervous as he was. If she was, she didn't show it. Her grey eyes were like a storm. Her lips were pressed in a tight line, and her chin was slightly lifted. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
"Let's go," she said.
As they walked toward the gathering, the ground shook violently. Percy lost his balance and fell, taking Annabeth with him. He looked up and locked eyes with her. They understood immediately; Gaea was waking up.
"Percy!" Annabeth shouted. "The ground! Jump!" Too late he realized what was happening. A great fissure was splitting the earth in two right at their feet. Now 50 feet across, there was no way he could reach her. As the chasm kept growing, Percy noticed something about 20 feet down. At first, he thought it was water pouring into the crevice, but it was the wrong color. This thing - whatever it was - looked white. In the middle, there was a pitch black circle, surrounded in bright green. Suddenly, the pieces clicked together in Percy's brain. It was an eye. One that could only belong to a god - or older being. Gaea's eye.
He noticed Annabeth on the other side of the eye, and a wave of fear swept over him. She was surrounded by monsters, and the Minotaur was at the front. Why did he keep coming back?! He snarled at Percy as if to say, I took your mother, I took your friends, and now I'm going to take the most important person in your life. The ground rumbled again as if it was laughing. Percy considered getting Annabeth's attention, but quickly decided that was a bad idea. All he could do was sit and watch in horror.
