I started to move the dishes to the tub on the seat. Whipping down the tabletop. Picking up the black tub holding it at my side. There were only three of us working today the other two were in the kitchen. The bell went off I look over to see my neighbor standing there. "one moment." I set the tub near the sink. And dust off my clothes. I go out to see who he was with. My body froze I could recognize that face anywhere. Why would he know Derrick I wasn't prepared to do this? I grab the little notepad and pen with two menus. Trying to hide my face the best I could. "right this way." I say not making eye contact. I sat them in a booth in the front of the dinner. "can I start you off with anything?" "Water is fine." he seconded it.
I know they didn't need water or food. They just wanted to blend in. I look over to see his sad face, I could see he could barely keep himself together. I grabbed two glasses and put two straws in my apron. Taking a deep breath and making my way over. My gaze met his as I set the glasses down, I couldn't look away. "hey" he said softly "hi" was all I could muster out. "I miss you... I miss us..." he said looking defeated. "I miss you too." I had to walk away tears wear forming. My heart dropped. I rushed to the kitchen, trying to catch my breath.
Time went by fast Derrick left shortly after I went to the kitchen. I look at the clock its time to go pick up the boys. I swung by the daycare. It went fairly good then I saw Derrick in the parking lot. I rushed the boys and fastened them in. Trying not to draw attention.
I knew he saw me his eyes followed me as I drove away. If he wanted to see me or to see us he knows where we live.
