Hazel and her mother are metics, meaning that they are non-Greeks residing in a Greek City-State and are of a fairly low status.
She would wear a simple chiton made of rough fabric, tied at the waist with a cord.
Athenian culture discouraged women from public life. The ideal Athenian woman only left her house to attend the theater and religious festivals but this was only possible for women who were wealthy enough not to work and to have slaves to run errands for them. Poor women had to leave their homes to shop and work. Athen culture also prized modesty in women and a good Athenian woman would wear a himation, a veil or cloak, when she left her house. I drew Hazel wearing a petasos, a sun hat made from straw, felt, or leather. Hazel's petasos is a Boeotian type, cone shaped, and made from straw.
Frank, her betrothed, is a guard at the palace of King Frederick and Queen Athena. I drew him as an archer.
The first layer he would wear would be a chiton over which he would wear his bronze breastplate, a leather overskirt, a leather belt which his sword would hand from, and his quiver of arrows. Bronze greaves would be worn on his legs and leather wrist guards would be worn on his arms. His head would be protected by a bronze helmet with a horsehair plume.
