Piper sensed something was not quite right about Annabeth when she saw what her friend was wearing: a topless Spartan dress, just a skimpy skirt with only her hair and a seashell necklace covering her chest. Queen Athena would have died from shock if she'd seen her daughter dressed like that.

The next cause for concern manifested itself when Percy greeted Annabeth. Usually, when Percy kissed her, it took all of Annabeth's maidenly modesty to keep her from giving herself to him then and there. Now, she avoided his gaze, even as he leaned in for a kiss, and flinched a little when his lips touched hers.
"What's wrong, Wise Girl, " Percy said.
"Nothing, " Annabeth replied, her cheeks flushed.  "I'm just a little overwhelmed; that's all."
"Overwhelmed about what?"
"About everything."
Percy tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and kissed her forehead.
"We'll ask the Queen of Goddesses to help us. Everything'll be well."
Piper put her hand on Annabeth's shoulder.
"Come, " she said. "Let's get you ready for the ceremony."

She took Annabeth's hand and led her towards the cave. She dressed her in the pink chiton Calypso had left behind and tied her hair back into a knot. Piper gasped. When Percy beheld his bride, he would think he was looking at a goddess.
Leo was the first person they encountered on their way back. He carried an armful of sticks and dried seaweed and whistled a light-hearted tune.
"My lady, " he said when he noticed Annabeth. "You're back."
He nearly dropped his bundle of kindling from shock.
"Yes, " Annabeth replied. Blushing, she turned to avoid meeting his eyes. "I am."
Annabeth had never been the shy and retiring type, so why she was behaving this way?
Leo looked Annabeth over, and his eyes fell upon her seashell necklace.
"Where'd you get that?"
Annabeth clutched at her throat.
"I don't remember. It was on me after I changed from an owl."
"I think I've seen it before."
" It's pretty, isn't it?"
"Yes."
"Let me help you with that."
Annabeth swooped in and took half of the kindling from him and carried it down to the beach.

A simple stone altar stood on the shore, facing the full moon. The sticks and seaweed that Leo had gathered fueled a fire burning inside a brazier. Light from the flames danced over garlands of red lilies placed on the altar.
