“Mind if I join you?”
You looked up. Badgerclops was standing over you with a bag of chips, his cybernetic arm glinting in the moonlight. You shrugged and glanced back towards the starry sky.
“Knock yourself out.”
Badgerclops plopped next you, opening the bag of chips and digging a paw in. You were distracted from your thoughts by the sound of his chewing, but you decided not to say anything. Instead you focused on the star formations. Not a hobby of yours, but it was something to do on this otherwise boring night.
“Pretty nice night, huh?”
“Yep. Clear skies.”
Badgerclops looked at you with his good eye. You were a legendary hero. A [gender] lizard with archery skills that were out of this world. He wondered why you bothered to stay in a place like Pureheart. Sure, the Pureheart Ruby was a legendary artifact, but it hardly got enough attention from evil to be truly considered as such an item.
“You know, you're an awesome hero. You could be saving big-time towns. Big time people.”
“So I've heard.”
“Why don't you?”
You stared at the sky for a while longer before turning to face Badgerclops. You stared at his eyepatch before your gaze wandered to his metal arm.
“Tell me what happened to you, and I'll tell you what happened to me.”
Badgerclops smiled, swallowing a mouthful of chips. With one seasoning-covered claw he pointed to his eyepatch.
“Accident with Mao Mao...”
Badgerclops then flexed his cybernetic arm.
“Accident with me.”
You hummed in response, thinking about a friend you once had. They also lost their arm in a personal accident. But because they were a lizard like you, it grew back. You turned away from Badgerclops, looking back at the night sky.
“Nothing serious really happened for me to be this way. I'm just not good with people. Everyone who's tried to work with me either gets offended by something I do or automatically hates me upon first meet. Maybe it gave me a few trust issues. But whatever happened, I know for a fact that the smaller the town, the smaller the eventual disappointment.”
Badgerclops decided against telling you that the few citizens of Pureheart Valley could be very disappointed if given proper motivation. Instead he thought about what you said.
“Hmmmmm...... you haven't offended me yet. And, I kinda like you.”
You snapped your head up, giving Badgerclops a questioning look (along wih a light blush).
“What are you trying to say?”
Badgerclops shrugged and stood up with a smile on his face.
“Aw I don't know. I was just kinda saying what was on my mind. But now I think I'm trying to say that if you give Mao Mao a chance, you two will really get along. He's a sucker for anything legendary. Adorabat too.”
You smiled, pretending to look at something on your hand. You had met Mao Mao once. He seemed a little unorganized and fanboy-ish, but not really mean. Adorabat was a cute child, but you certainly remember seeing her snap at a villager for no reason one tine. The trio seemed eccentric, but not as toxic as your past groups.
“And what about you?”
“That my friend, is an answer for another time. Preferably one where I have more chips. Goodnight!”
Badgerclops waved at you before turning and heading back home. You watched him walk away.
“And, I kinda like you.”
You thought about that phrase for a while before standing up and walking to your own hideout. You still weren't so sure about what Badgerclops had told you, but maybe you could give the whole teamwork thing another try.
