Chapter Five

I carefully sauntered through the hospital hallways passing all sorts of people. Some in tears, some walking to their hospital rooms ready for a surgery, some with smiles that their loves ones are being released and some just sitting, reading a magazine that was a month over-due. Nurses stared at me, looking up and down in my clothes and wondered why I was out my room. But I kept my head down avoiding any contact with them.

I kept following the signs that where supposed to lead me to the waiting room/reception but I started to think if I would ever get there. When I was just about to loose faith, I spotted two parents walking with their child whilst holding a suitcase making their way to the elevators. They where probably heading to the reception, ready to sign out and then leave.

I followed them straight into the elevator – and I was right, they lead me to the reception. The elevator binged and the door slid open, revealing a spacious and light reception. There where plenty of places to seat, half of them occupied but even though there where a lot of people, my eyes immediately landed on Harry.

I gracefully walked over to him, my slippers making a sound every step I took. Harry’s face was down, focusing on something else. No one was beside him. I felt pity at once that he was sitting here, alone and his girlfriend that was I, forgot about him.

I was a step away from him, and he still didn’t notice my presence. I cleared my throat once and then again and that seemed to catch his attention. His lips curled into a small smile and he quickly brushed his hair.

“Hi,” I whispered with a small smile as well.

“Hi,” Harry whispered back, his smile growing a bit bigger.

“Can I sit down?”

“Of course,” Harry nodded, scooting up as he turned his waist a bit more of where I was going to sit. I sat down on the plastic white chair and played a bit with my fingers.

“So,” I started dragging the ‘o’ a bit whilst thinking of how I was going to put my words together. “I can’t remember the last two years.” From the corner of my eye, Harry did a quick nod, wiping his finger by his nose and looked away.

“And Mia told me, you and I where, erm – we where,” I stuttered not knowing how to put the words together. I could sense Harry and I where both uncomfortable.

“Dating,” Harry finished from me, his voice making me jump a bit. I nodded and let my face hang down. Tears rose to my eyes but I fought back the urge to let them spill out. A hand rubbed against my back and Harry whispered soothing words in my ear.

“Ha-arry,” I stuttered as I glanced up at him, our eyes directly meeting. “I wish I could remember, I really do.” Harry smiled once more but it was more of a dreadful smile. A smile that was just supposed to encourage someone. Assure someone.

“I know,” Harry whispered as he gently swiped a tear that slipped down my cheek unnoticed away. Something about being with Harry felt right. It felt like I did spend a lot of time with. It did feel like I laughed, cried and smiled about him. He felt like the one.

For the next 5 minutes, we where silent. He let me lean in his chest, silently sobbing, letting him wipe every tear away. I enjoyed his presence near me. It felt right. But as 5 minutes flew by, one of the nurses found out I wasn’t in my room anymore and demanded me to go back. So I stood in front of Harry, him holding my hands for comfort.

“I’ll see you tomorrow?” I asked him, as I hopefully looked up at him. Harry smiled, but this time it was a big, happy smile. Not a reassuring or encouraging smile, a smile that was meant to be there. Just by saying what I did.

“Of course,” he promised as he leaned down to give me a kiss on the cheek. I flinched at first but let him kiss my cheek. After his lips left my cheek, he let go of my hands, handing me over to the nurse.

“Oh and Harry,” I called as he turned on his heel. He turned his head around and gave a half-nod. “Go home?” I pleaded. Harry did a quick chuckle but thankfully nodded. A smile played on lips as I walked back to my room with the nurse.

Maybe I was going to be fine after all?
