Jungkook scanned the faces in the cafeteria subconsciously. No, this is not it. Huh, plain. Boring. He spotted a girl from a window facing table, occupied by her and her girlfriends and thought, "cute, but not it."
"Yo bro. You're lost again." Jimin snapped his fingers in front of Jungkook, bringing him back to reality. "Who do you keep searching for?"
"nothing." Jungkook mumbled, slurping his iced Americano. He hates coffee.
"I see. How are you holding up?" Jimin thought he knew what was up with the younger.
"There is nothing to hold up, Jimin." Jungkook snickered, "it's just taking me more time to adjust to the city than I thought."
"I know right. It still has been just a few weeks for you, kookie. It took me a whole year to get used to the noise and pollution. And the people."
"People, I swear." Jungkook sighed, dropping his eyes when he realized he was staring at something again. "I miss home, Busan beaches, the fresh air, mom, dad. It's like I left whatever I loved behind." He held the coffee cup and showed it to the one sitting in front of him. Jimin laughed at this.
"On the brighter side, you did get a job. That's great you know. Finding a job here this early is also a good sign."
"It's a delivery job, there's nothing great about it. I couldn't even get a job of a waiter."
"So, how are the classes?" Jimin enquired.
Jungkook raised his eyebrow. The sudden topic change was giving him whiplash.
"What are you trying to get out of me, Minnie? It's almost like... wait a second. Did mom ask you to check up on me?" Jimin chose to stay silent than lie because he knew the other would catch it.
Jungkook caught his silence instead.
"Well then, tell her, her son is absolutely fine, nothing to worry about. He secured a half decent job, is trying to get along with Yugyeom, his dormitory mate. He understands what's all taught in classes and finds the Seoul University exciting. But harsh."
Jimin signed, Jungkook looks annoyed. "Look kooks, she is worried about you, okay? I am too. Just because I study in the same university does not mean I could give you all my attention, even if I want to. You have to open up to me, tell me what's new, and what bothers you. Just like old times. This may not be Busan, but I'm still the same Jimin, you know."
Jungkook knew where he was coming from. Being a year older than him, he had to leave home for college and stay here all alone until Jungkook joined him a few weeks ago. Jungkook worried for his hyung too the time they were apart but he wouldn't admit it.
"Look at you, getting all mellow over me." He smiled, showing his bunny teeth. They both knew how well that smiled worked wonders on the other.
"Jerk." Jungkook burst out laughing at this.
Jimin turned to the clock smiling, which faded instantly. "Seems like my break is over, I'll see you soon?"
"How bout never!" Jungkook jumped from his seat, dodging the slap.
Jimin shook his head and went behind the counter, back to his job as a barista. He saw his best friend collecting his bag and reaching for the exit.
"Text me when you get free. Later!" Jungkook waved giggling and stepped out of the café, into the wind of autumn.
He soaked a deep breath and took a quick bus to the campus. He was glad Jimin got a job nearby. Although he doesn't know how his own job's gonna be? He has to start day after tomorrow, the upcoming Monday.
Jungkook rested his slightly aching head on the cool window glass, and stared outside. Fools by Troye Sivan was trying its best to soothe him, through earphones.
Jungkook scanned the faces in the bus subconsciously.
He observed the moving city. Busan was bustling but Seoul reaches to another level. The more he tried to understand it, the more it complexes. But one thing he understood was that, people don't care about others here, they are here for a reason. They all have left something behind and came stumbling here, searching for fame, money, recognition, or simply a life.
While Jungkook searched for those eyes.
