Chapter Four What If?

A Walking Dead Fanfiction

"Do you think they'll be ok?" Sophia asked Carl. He seemed to have all the answers she was looking for.

"Probably. At least I hope so." They were sitting on top of the hill, overlooking the campsite. There they could watch the adults of their chores, Eliza and Louis splash in the quarry, and most importantly, the van that held Glenn, Jaquie, T-Dog, Merle and Morales speed towards the city.

"I just don't understand why they all have to go," she explained, lying on her back in the cool grass.

"Maybe they're going to be looking for lots of supplies," he suggested, doing the same as she did.

"Maybe." She let out a soft sigh, and closed her eyes.

"Did you ever try to make pictures out of the clouds?" He casually placed his hand on hers.

"Sometimes. When I was in the car mostly."

"Yeah, me too. That one kinda looks like a bird," he said, pointing to a big, white, puffy cloud.

"No! It looks more like an elephant!" This caused both kids to laugh.

Together, they laid on the hill some more, in complete silence. It wasn't an awkward silence, but a peaceful silence.

It wasn't too long until the children fell asleep in the cool grass. A light breeze made the hot sun slightly more bearable. It wasn't until a few hours later, that the sound of static coming across the radio woke them up.

"What is that?" Sophia asked groggily.

"I think it's the radio. Common, let's go see if someone is trying to call!" Still holding her hand, he pulled her down the hill.

The adults sat in a circle with Amy in the middle, fiddling with the dials on the radio. A few moments later, Dale got fusterated at the luck they were having, and insisted that Shane go and help her. The two sat and almost got a signal, but by then it was too late. All was silent, hoping to hear from the mysterious voice again, but it never came. The only noise was from Eliza and Louis, who were coloring by the water, and being very loud.

Carl didn't know whether to be upset that they couldn't help the person, or be angry at the other children. They didn't have anything to worry about. They had two living parents, didn't have to help their mother with chores, and he bet that they had never seen a walker. Getting annoyed, he got up, and walked away from the others. Without turning around, he felt Sophia behind him.

"Where are you going?" She asked, rushing to catch up with him.

"For a walk," he replied.

"Oh... mind if I join you?"

"I guess not." She caught up to him, and pretty soon their speed was in sync.

"Are you mad?" She asked.

"Yes."

"Oh... why are you mad Carl?"

"Because they don't get it!" He explained, plopping down on the ground. They were now by the edge of the forest.

"Who doesn't understand?" She sat down next to him.

"Anyone! My dad is dead, and the walkers, and the-"

Sophia inturupted him by pulling him in a hug. He didn't realize he was crying until he felt the tears on her shirt. She kept him there for a few minutes, like her mom did when she cried.
