Copper Harbor, Michigan, 1995
It was early October.
The cold Autumn breeze spreads around Copper Harbor, a sleepy, remote town with no history to begin with. Towards the Copper Harbor Lighthouse, two distinct teenagers are leaning on the dock fence, looking towards the wide and misty waters of Lake Superior, watching the opaque fog covering the entire lake, blocking the scenery of Lake Superior itself, stretching all the way across. The two adolescents, weary and inconstant make way towards the end of the dock fence, shielding themselves from the bitter Autumn breeze.
Along the way to their vehicle, one of the teenagers wraps his arm around the other teenager, who quickly breaks away from contact.
"I'm fine, Harrison."
"Judy, you're shaking inside out. You're freezing."
"Harrison, really. I'm fine. You don't have to do this."
Harrison stops Judy as he begins to take off his jacket, covering his jacket around Judy. Judy, silently emotionless, wraps his jacket around her.
"Thanks."
"Don't mention it. It's the least I can do for you."
Harrison and Judy continue walking, slowly trudging along with the leaves crunching as they take a step towards the parking lot.
"Huh. I can't believe it," Judy exclaims loudly.
"Can't believe what?" Harrison asked.
"That we actually did it. We actually came here. It's quite amazing how we do things before we think about it."
Harrison wraps his arm around Judy, making her lean on his chest, walking more slowly as they crunch the leaves softly.
"This is just ridiculous to be here," Harrison blurts out suddenly.
"You don't like it here?"
"I do. It's just-"
"What?"
"It's not what I have envisioned. We could have gone anywhere in this country and you wanted to go visit some lighthouse here-"
"It sounds like you hate my decision."
Judy broke free from Harrison's arms, facing him with frustration.
"Stop doing that."
"Stop doing what?" says Harrison, dumbfounded with Judy's attitude. "Don't want me to express my emotions and perspective on why I don't like being here?"
"That hurts," Judy says coldly. "I don't have anything against you expressing anything. I just hate it how you say things that sounds like you're so ungrateful. I'm with you on this. Don't you even feel happy that I'm with you?"
Harrison rubs his head with frustration.
"Judy, I don't mean it like that-"
"Of course you don't-"
"Judy, I'm serious."
"So am I. It's been two weeks since we left. Two! We are a thousand miles away from where we used to live and now, things are going pretty downhill between you and me."
Judy walks ahead, getting far away from Harrison, fretting and pondering over what he said wrong.
