Chapter One
"Heyyy Izzy" Someone called from the lawn of an average sized house, which was currently full of drunk, noisy high school students. I could smell the weed and booze before I had even reached the front door, and for a brief second I actually considered turning around and leaving. But I knew that getting drunk was what would make the pain of my father's death go away.
What had once started as a burning pain in her chest, had overtime, become a gentle ache. But some days were better than others, and on those other days I wanted to lay in bed and feel miserable by myself. So I did just the opposite, dressed up and called my close friends and we all got drunk and high and forgot about their lives for the rest of the night. That was how it had been since freshman year and it seemed that that was how it would stay.
Shoving through a crowd of sweaty bodies, I spotted my best friend Cassidy, or Cas, and immediatly got her attention.
"Izzy I'm glad you could make it, lets go get a drink" she smiled, tugging on my arm and leading me to the kitchen. Cas was the only one who knew about everything I went through the last few years and I was very thankful to have her.
"Have you seen Brett?" I question as Cas pours me some type of vodka. My boyfriend, unfortunetly, was probably already hammered.
"Probably in the backyard, but lets not think about him, come dance with me!" She grins, dragging me to the dance floor and almost spilling my drink.
"Geez Cas at least let me have a drink and loosen up first. You didn't see Brett with any girls did you?" now I may sound like a nagging girlfriend but lately our relationship has been on the rocks and I've been more worried and clingy than normal.
"No you guys have been together for almost 2 years, he wouldn't cheat on you now so relax and have some fun for once." Cas sighed.
I decided I should let loose tonight and lucky for me alcohol not only makes the heartache go away but also the boyfriend problems. Chugging the last of my drink, I began to feel a buzz and I laughed, following Cas's lead and swaying my hips to the music.
It wasn't long before my group of girls and I were completely drunk. We made our way out to the backyard.
"Bretttttt" I yelled, drunkedly swaying through the mob of people. I spotted his group standing around a small fire pit in a dark corner of the yard.
"Brettt heyyy babe I haven't seen you all night, where you been?"
"Celebrating Iz" He grinned and winked at me, which sent an explosion of butterflies off in my stomach... Or maybe that was the alcohol coming back up, who knows.
"Why are you celebrating, nothing special happened... Wait did you write me a new song?" I smiled a dopey smile, thinking of the last beautiful song Brett wrote and dedicated to me.
"No, even better babe, you know how our song Stranger Things Have Happened went viral?"
"Yeahhhh it got like a hundred thousand views right, thats really good" I said, slightly sobering up as my curiosity started eating away.
"Yeah but the tour manager of the band 5 Seconds of Summer saw the video and asked if wanted to open for them on their upcoming tour!"
I almost vomited because of both shock and excitement.
"What? On tour, like, singing at their concerts in front of real people and like traveling? When? How?" My mind was reeling as I asked him all these questions without thinking.
"It starts in three weeks, right after finals and we'll probably miss the beginning of senior year but we can figure that out when the time comes. It's great exposure and pays quite a bit of money." He said smiling as if he had just won the lottery.
Well I suppose to him this was the equivilant of winning the lottery, so I put on a fake smile and congratulated him. But deep down I was scared. I had had Brett by my side since my dad died and he had helped me through so much, how was I going to spend the whole summer without him?
"Babe I can see you thinking too hard, just relax for now and we can talk tomorrow."
"Yeah, sounds good, I'll text you or something tomorrow I just think I'll go home now" I said, turning on my heel and trying to keep myself from sprinting to my car.
I heard Cas say, "I think I'll go with her" and quickly follow behind me.
After getting in the car and turning on the ignition Cas got in and gave me a funny look.
"What was that? I thought hearing your boyfriend's success would make you happy and he wasn't even hanging out with other girls."
"It's not that I'm not happy for him it just feels like this is a huge opportunity for him and he should totally take it but our relationship is on the rocks and its going to be stressful and what if we can't handle long distance, I haven't gone a day with out him" I started to tear up as these fears became more and more real as I admitted them out loud.
"You guys will be fine Iz, and if not then we can always find you some eye candy and live the single life together! How great would that be, you haven't been single in forever" She seemed almost excited by the idea of Brett and I breaking up.
"Soooo great" I muttered, rolling my eyes.
When we pulled up to my small house, we quietly snuck in, careful not to wake the sleeping beast that is my mother.
As I lay there, imagining all of the possibilities for the future, I realized that maybe it could work, perhaps I could go on tour with Brett for part of the summer and we would be fine.
"It's going to be okay Izzy"
"Yeah, I guess it is"
