Prologue
My name is Jennifer Kelsey Mason and I’m thirteen years old. My parents have always told me that I was a surprise. My mother didn’t know she was expecting me until only a short few months before my birth.
And them telling me I was a surprise often made me feel special.
Until now. Now I fully understand what they mean. They mean that I was never meant to be. I was never meant to exist and I only do as an accident.
My mother told me at first she was terrified when she found out about me. But she loves me unlike anything else in the world.
I love my parents. But even I know there’s something too dark in their past for them to ever forget.
I want to know what it is but they won’t tell me and there’s no one else I can ask.
My mother’s family were all dead before I was born and my father’s parents died not long ago.
So I’m determined, one way or the other, I’m going to find out exactly what happened in their past.
Liam’s POV
My name is Liam Odair. I’m nineteen years old and I live with my mother. It’s always been just us. My mother and me. My Dad didn’t leave us or anything. He died before I was born. That’s all I know about my dad. My mother doesn’t talk about him. I think it’s just easier for her to focus on the present. The past brings out wounds that not even she can bear to look at yet. She always told me that my dad would love me. He’d be so proud to have a son like me. But without knowing anything about my dad, it’s hard to tell isn’t it? So now, I’ve decided I’m going to find out everything I possibly can about my father.
It may take years but I’m determined to know him. I’m determined to know the man they all talk about. The wonderful Finnick Odair. I want to know what happened in my mother’s past that she connects him with a bad memory. One other than his death that is.
I want to know so that maybe, I could tell his life story to my own family in the future.
Or even just so I can say I know what happened in my father’s past at least.
