Chapter 1: She's the one
Jennifer’s POV
There are some things even the strongest of people aren’t equipped to deal with.
I suppose I’d class myself as a strong person. I’m definitely capable of standing on my own two feet. I’ve never had anyone to lean on. No friends that is. The only friend I’ve ever had is Willow, a weeping willow by the lake in the meadow by our house. She’s the only friend I’ve ever had. The person I tell my troubles to.
Someone asked me what I wanted from my life once. I told them the only thing I’ve ever wanted is to meet someone with whom I can be myself.
But then one day, a few weeks after my thirteenth birthday, my mother told me something that changed my whole perception of life.
“Mum?” I asked. “What did you do when you found out you were expecting me?”
My mother sighs. “Freaked out.” She said.
“Did you tell Dad?” I ask.
My mother shakes her head. “Your father didn’t know about you until you were two months old.”
“You mean he didn’t know I existed?”
My mother nods. “He was staying in another District and there was a brief time when we feared letters were being intercepted. I was afraid to send a letter in case they tracked us down and took you. I couldn’t let it happen not after I’d had you.”
“Did you ever think about … you know … getting rid of me?”
My mother shrugs. “Of course the thought crossed my mind. I was all alone when you were born but the minute I held you, I knew I could never let you go.”
I nod. “How did Dad react when you told him?”
My mother laughs. “He sent me a letter telling me he was returning to the District and he asked if he could visit me. I accepted of course and the day he showed up, I was so nervous. He came in and he saw you lying in your crib by the window. He said you were beautiful and he said he especially liked your eyes. I told him you got them from your father and when he asked who your father was, I told him. He was shocked to say the least but from that day on, he’s loved you more than anything on earth.”
“Anything?”
My mother nods.
“I suppose I just always assumed I came second to something or someone. I do in everything else, right?”
My mother shakes her head. “Someday, you’ll understand.”
“What day? Today? Tomorrow? Next month? Next year? I’m sick of not understanding anything!”
“Jen a lot has happened in the past that you don’t understand. When you do know, you’ll be wiser. More able to understand the things we tell you.”
I nod. “Whatever.” And storm off.
I hate being on the outside.
And I won’t be on the outside for anyone. Not even my mother.
