I'd like to make myself believe,
That planet earth turns slowly,
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep,
'Cause everything is never as it seems.

Chapter 3: Everything is never as it seems
Jennifer’s POV
I’m casually sitting in the corner of the living room minding my own business and trying to block out the noise of my mother’s birthday party when my father rushes up to me announcing that someone has arrived that I have to meet.
I reluctantly follow him into the kitchen where my mother is chatting to a man and a woman.
“Ah Jennifer! This is Annie and Liam Odair.” My mother says.
I smile politely. “Pleased to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
My mother was good friends with Finnick Odair, Annie’s husband and Liam’s father.
“Jennifer, why don’t you show Liam the garden? I’m sure he’d like it, being from District 4 and all.” My father says.
I nod. “Right this way Liam.”
He smiles reluctantly at his mother and follows me to the garden.
“You know you don’t have to come if you don’t want to.” I say with a smile.
“Nah it’s cool. I haven’t got much else to do have I? I mean I’d rather not engage in conversation with our parents about previous Hunger Games and rebellions.”
I resist the urge to shoot him a confused look. What on earth is he talking about?
I decide to play along. “Yes that would not be my idea of a good time.”
Liam laughs and we walk the rest of the way in silence.
“This is it. The famous Mason garden.” I say.
“It’s amazing!” Liam says. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think it was a beach in four!”
I nod. “It is pretty amazing. My mother liked the beach so much in District 4 that she wanted one here.”
Liam smiles. “District four is a pretty amazing place.”
“I’ve never been. I’ve never really been anywhere.” I say.
“District 12 is my favourite. It’s so simple there.” Liam says.
I smile. “Life is never simple here.”
“What do you mean?” Liam asks.
“It’s never simple here. There’s always some complicated matter.” I say simply.
Liam nods. “What’s that?” He asks, pointing beyond the beach in the garden.
“That’s the meadow.” I reply. “My best friend lives there.”
“In the meadow?” Liam asks.
“My best friend is a tree.” I say.
“How come?” Liam asks.
“Nobody really talks to me in school. I don’t have any other friends.”
“Why not?” Liam asks.
“They all think I’m a freak.”
“I don’t think you’re a freak. I think you’re beautiful.” Liam says.
I smile. “Thanks.”
“Can I ask you something?” Liam asks.
I nod.
“What’s it like to have a dad?” He asks.
I shrug. “He’s overprotective. But I know he loves me.”
Liam nods. “How do you know?”
“My mother told me. He didn’t even know about me until I was two months old and he stayed to look after me. So I know he loves me.”
“How did he not know about you?” Liam asks.
“I was never supposed to exist. But coincidence or not, I’m here.” I say.
