"Gabe, scuttlebutt around the office says that you've moved out of Homicide and that you've been given a promotion", said Addison.
"I have. Rumour sure moves fast! I've been transferred to a new unit, the Crimes Against Children Unit. I'll be working with Tara Wheeler. Until yesterday, she was working out of Sexual Assault. We'll be dealing with child abuse, kidnappings and missing children reports, internet exploitation, basically whatever involves crimes that affect the under eighteen crowd. Not crimes committed by children, but those that are committed against children. I'm quite excited about it. It's a position that uses all my skills I learned in Homicide and Vice, as well as my computer skills, and it will involve a lot of collaboration with the other units. I'll also be able to use my administrative skills that I learned over the years as I take on the duties of being a lieutenant."
"Where will you be working out of?" asked Addison.
"I'll be in the Major Crimes Division, so I'll still be working out of the second floor here at headquarters. However, Tara and I have been given our own office to work in, complete with a door and everything. We're definitely moving up in the world", he smiled.
"We have fifteen minutes until my next appointment. Can we go down to see your new office?" I asked.
"Not me. I'll stay here to capture Hillie if she comes back", said Addison.
"Sure, we can go. I can introduce you to Tara at the same time. She's nice. I've seen her work with kids before, and she's excellent with them. It must be all her experience with them. She has four of her own."
"If she has four kids, how will she handle the on-call time?"
"She has a very supportive husband. I met him a couple of years ago, and he seems like a nice guy. Totally dedicated to his wife and family."
"That's good. So I don't have to go all Hillie on her?" I smiled.
Gabe started to laugh. "No. I'm definitely a one-woman man."
"That's good, because I am a one-man woman." I threw out Gabe's and my garbage from our lunches and, holding Gabe's hand, said goodbye to Addison and walked down the stairs to Gabe's new office.
Meeting Tara took a few minutes longer than I expected. As Gabe had said, she was a really nice person who I think will be a good team member. I raced upstairs and walked into my office to see Brenda and Hugh waiting with my next patient. "Were you able to put in the report on our last felon?" I asked as they took off the cuffs and shackles and escorted the new felon to the door of my treatment room.
"We did. Based on what you said, we filled out a statement from you and just need you to review it and, if you approve of it, to sign it."
"I'll do that at the end of this session, if that's all right."
I took the file that Addison was holding out to me and, with a smile at the police officers, I followed the felon into my office.
I looked down at the file. "You're Britta Hayes, is that correct?" I said as I sat down in my seat and motioned to her to sit down on the couch.
"I am."
"Hi. It's nice to meet you. I'm Dr. Callie Douglas. Do you know why you are here today?"
"Not exactly. I'm not even sure why I'm in jail. The officers who picked me up said that I had stolen several pieces of jewellery. But I don't remember stealing anything. I don't think I did it."
"Yet the jewellery was found in your possession. How do you explain that?"
"I don't know. I know I was found in the store. I don't even remember going into that store. But I was in there when I was found, so I must have gone in at some point. I don't remember taking anything either, but since I don't remember going into the store I guess it's possible. I have never stolen anything in my life before, so I'm having a hard time with this. It makes more sense to me that somebody planted the jewellery on me, maybe waiting to see if I'd get caught."
