Chapter 2:
We all piled into the large van that the Academy owned. The princess and Rosemarie sat in front of me. I took the very back bench, watching them closely.
Why did they seem so close to me? I shouldn't have been bothered by it; they were best friends after all. But there was something about the way Vasilisa acted with Rosemarie that made it weird.
Rosemarie's need to protect the princess was understandable; it was her job to protect her Moroi, even though Vasilisa wasn't her assignment. Yet. But for Vasilisa to have the same need was beyond weird. The more I watched them the more I understood that they weren't just best friends; they had something even the old legends had long forgotten.
They had a bond, something I had read about in my mentor's library when I was younger. The legends had claimed that all the best guardians had a bond with their Moroi. The bond enabled them to protect their Moroi better, though I don't know how. The stories were so old that no one knew how the bond worked. But watching these two I was certain.
When we arrived at the air port we rushed to the private jet the Academy owned. After all being at a school that was named after a Saint was pretty rich.
While getting our flight ready I noticed the girls huddled together, whispering about something. The fact that they were consulting each other in a private manner concerned me; they could come up with an escape plan. And we had come this far to get the princess home and safe. If they managed to get out again we would be in a lot of trouble with the Headmistress.
"Don't let them talk to each other," I told one of the guardians that was now leading Rosemarie to the back of the plane. "Five minutes together, and they'll come up with an escape plan."
The look Rosemarie gave me proved that had been exactly what they were doing. Not that their options of getting out were good anyways. They would be trapped once in the air.
I took the seat next to Vasilisa, in case of a Strigoi attack I wanted to be the one to protect her. Even though we were on a plane, and a private one at that instinct ran too strong in my blood, as it did for all dhampirs.
Killing a Strigoi was a lot harder than the human fantasy books made them up to be. For one thing they were brutal when it came to killing. And every dhampir was honored if they survived and killed a Strigoi.
Those dhampirs get molnija marks tattooed on the back of their necks. They looked like two streaks of jagged lightning crossing in an X symbol. We get one for each Strigoi we kill. I had six of them, and a promise mark that permanently marked me as a guardian.
The princess was quiet the whole flight. I tried to make conversation with her, but she only responded with short answers. Her voice clipped at the end of every word. Clearly showing she didn't want to talk.
After half of the flight was over I told one of the guardians that I was going to the back of the plane to check on Rosemarie. What I was really doing was seeing if I was right about their bond.
The guardian sitting next to Hathaway acknowledged me as he walked away. I took his seat, staring at her, though she didn't see me. She was looking out the window, clearly trying to ignore me.
I took a minute to look her over; she was about seventeen, a senior. She had dark brown hair, which appeared almost black. Big brown eyes; and tan skin. She was well built, like all dhampirs were. She had curves and other mature things that Moroi women did not. Moroi looked like skinny runaway models, only better. While dhampirs looked like normal human beings, excluding the strength and extra muscle.
