1: Write a chapter about how your character becomes friends with his/her best friend.
I was in sixth grade when I met Travis Black. Though, we only started talking in the ninth grade when my arm was hit by a roughly folded note. At that time, I was admiring the graceful blue sky tuning out whatever the teacher was saying- I probably already knew everything he was talking about anyways. When the piece of paper hit me, I glared at it but still opened it thinking it was a random, cruel note from one of the big crowd.
The big crowd was my friend Julia’s way of saying popular kids. They weren’t all rich and mean, but just to let you know, most of them were. With elaborate parties and money to go where ever a ninth grader would dream of, the people on the outskirts of their town couldn’t help but want to be them too. That was including me. There’s always a crowd of people following them, some with good intentions and some just wanted a piece of the action. You couldn’t blame them though, they did everything a ninth grader could do.
I pulled back my jet black hair and opened the note. As I opened the note expecting the worst of someone from the big crowd, arrogant enough to think she needed more attention, surprise and shock filled me as I read the note.
Do you want to go out on a date with me?-Travis Black
“Are you alright Ms. Soto?” said Mr. Wable, looking up from what he was doing. Wow, I thought, he didn’t even notice the note in my hand, maybe tomorrow I can nap here. “I’m fine Mr. Wable, thank you for your concern,” I replied back. After I knew that Mr. Wable wasn’t looking in my direction, I took another glance at the note. Why would someone from from the big crowd ask me out? Heck, why would they even talk to me! He probably doesn’t even know my name! Questions raced through my head, each of the questions getting more impossible and lead me to assuming the worse intentions. What if this was just a joke and the plan they had was just to make me fall for his gorgeous looks and then watch as I ran down the hall crying because he turned me down. My thoughts became more intricate as more make-believe plans came through my head. I was so distraught that I wasn’t paying attention around me, I wasn’t paying attention to especially Travis- his hands waving in a frantic motion trying to get my attention without signaling the teacher that he had been passing notes. Too bad I didn’t see it.
As the bell rung, I quickly stumbled out not wanting to look Travis or any other big crowd members. I sighed in relief as I remembering that it was lunch, maybe I could ask Julia about what she thought. As I entered the cafeteria building I made a beeline for the lunch line, hoping I would be able to quickly start talking about my situation with Travis. Julia, even though she was shy, she had a lot to say to me and we get into very detailed conversations. After I bought my lunch, I headed toward our navy blue lunch table that we sat at since the beginning of the school year. I was careful enough today to be aware of my surrounds so I don’t trip and fall like I did on the first day. I could still remember the burger slapping against my shirt, then falling onto the dirty ground leaving a giant ketchup stain on my new shirt. I shuddered at the thought but then I soon reached Julia and immediately started talking about the note and what had happened. She listened intently as I told her my story without stopping to eat.
Julia was gorgeous and it truly is a wonder why she was hanging out with a short, small-eyed asian girl who wasn’t even close to popularity. She had long, shiny blonde hair and electric blue eyes, but she wasn’t gorgeous just because she looked like your typical blonde, it was because she stood out and was different than the crowd. Her charm could make anyone grin, the school loved her, staff and students included, or were just jealous of her. She was a great friend, and the only thing keeping us together and her away from the big crowd was the fact that she was shy and seemed to only speak to the people who she deemed worth her time. Those people were definitely not the major players of the big crowd.
