Rachel's POV

Sunday was such a bore. All I did was dit around on my bed and watch Netflix. I was still mad at Steven for embarrassing me at school, so hanging out with him was a no. Amber went to visit her cousin in San Diego for the weekend, so hanging out with her was a no.

I suddenly remembered Alex, the nice boy from the yogurt shop. I grabbed my phone from beside me, opened up the messaging app, and clicked on our conversation.

To: Alex from Rita's
wanna hang out today?!?!

From: Alex from Rita's
sure?!?!

To: Alex from Rita's
kk meet me at the movies at 4

From: Alex from Rita's
kk

I set my phone on the beside table and put it to charge. Seeing it was 2:27, I decided to get ready. I went into my closet and pulled out a pair of jeans and my Pink Floyd band tee. I plugged in my curling wand to the outlet and waited for it to heat up.

When the wand dinged, I immediately stopped what I was doing and started on my hair. Strand by strand, my hair got shorter and curlier. I brushed out my curls to make them look natural.

Once I finished, I unplugged the iron and checked my phone for any messages from Alex.

From: Alex from Rita's
hey is it ok if my cousin comes bc she said she's bored?!?

To: Alex from Rita's
sure

Before putting my phone back down, I. checked the time. I had 45 minutes until I had to leave to meet Alex and his cousin at the movies, so I went downstairs to find my dad and sister making lunch.

"Ray, can you go next door and ask if they have tomatoes? Your sister really wants some in her sandwich and we don't have any," my dad called from the kitchen. I rolled my eyes and shouted back a quick sure.

I slipped on my flats that were in the living room and went next door. I knocked 4 times before someone answered.

"Hey, Rachel, what can I do for you?" Jackie asked from the doorway, smiling brightly like always. One thing I liked about her was the fact that she always seemed to be happy and was super funny without even trying.

"Hey Jackie. I came by to see if you guys have any tomatoes we can have? We don't have any at the moment and my sister really wants some," I explained, stuffing my hands into my pockets.

"I think so, wait here." She left the door ajar before she left. I awkwardly waited on the doorstep, my foot playing with the little pebbles on the ground.

I look up at the sound of footsteps approaching the front door, expecting it to be Jackie.

But of course, it was Steven.

Fuck.

I looked down again and pretended that he wasn't standing seven feet in front of me.

"Uh, hi," my head snaps back up at the sound of his voice. Me, still being immature and mad, just nodded my head and looked back down.

"Rachel, I know you're mad and all, but you have to understand that people can't know I kind of like you. If they found out that I kissed you, no one would want anything to do with me."

By the time Steven was done talking, I was pretty mad.

"So you're saying that you having 'friends' and all is more important than being who you want to be?" I ask him. "I think it's you who understands that you're being such an asshole!"

Jackie came out with the tomatoes before Steven could reply to my last statement. I grabbed the four small, ripe tomatoes from her hand and went back home, not daring to spare another look at Steven.
