Tanu and Carla are inseparable, almost as one flesh as they cling together for warmth and comfort underneath the fluffy duvet. Carla's heart throbbing with love, she pulls her best friend to her own chest - fiercely holding her as she sleepily listens to Tanu's fairy tales.
Tanu - hiding her own heart aching with pangs of jealous - smiles her exquisite smile as Carla drifts to sleep.
"Sorry bestie." She mumbles, her tears soaking the cheek of the sleeping girl who softly smiles in her sleep as though accepting the apology.

CARLA:

I am overcome with a sudden rush of joy and I hear myself cry out "Tanu!" and run to my best friend, my dress swishing. Tanu who had come in with her head very high, her arrogant dark look darting everywhere, suddenly stops being her condescending self and throws out her arms to me.

"Oh Carla," Tanu says breathlessly, her arms tight around me, her cheek pressed to mine.

"Hello best friend." I inhale the familiar scent of her. Soap and rosewater essence from her warm skin, lavender from her clothes.

"Sorry I left before you woke. You alright?" I ask her.

"Yes. You?"

"Bien sur! Have you gone shopping already? School begins tomorrow."

"Yes, ages ago." She replies with a radiant smile.

"Did too. But got nothing grand." I frown.

"Why?" She pulls back to read my face.

"It's just all rather awful really."

Her scowl melts away and she giggles, her eyes dancing. "How was it awful?"

"You were not there. My anxiety kicked in and I picked some dull clothes in the nearby stores and hurriedly left!"

She collapses in a wail of laughter. "No!"

"Come on, let me present you to one of our teachers, Miss Bella. It will do you good to make acquaintance before school. Now, she's strict." I warn her. We walk up to Miss Bella who turns at the click of Tanu's heels.

Miss Bella takes the measure of Tanu with one of her clear black-eyed sweeps and I feel a pang of fear that she will prefer my best friend to me.

Tanu sweeps the teacher an immaculate Indian curtsey and comes up as if she owns the school. She speaks in a voice rippling with that seductive accent, her every gesture is that of an Indian high born. I note with glee Miss Bella's frosty response to Tanu's stylish manner.

"Tanu, you say? Tone down the entitlement. I will not tolerate it in my class." Miss Bella glares at Tanu.

"It's  actually confidence." Tanu murmurs under her breath.

"Yeah confidence is for fools. To make up for lack of intelligence." Miss Bella sashays away leaving a frowning Tanu.

"I warned you!" I hiss at Tanu as I draw her to a window seat. "This is a Catholic school, it's very modest. You should try and fit in."
